Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) colonisation and infection among livestock workers and veterinarians: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that livestock workers, especially swine farmers, are at significantly higher risk for LA-MRSA colonisation and subsequent infection. These results support the need for preventive practices to reduce LA-MRSA risk among those who handle and treat livestock.

Evolution and genomic insight into methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ST9 in China

Nansong Jiang et al.

Summary: In China, Staphylococcus aureus ST9 diverged in pig farming as early as 1987 and rapidly evolved in the following three decades. ST9 isolates share similar multiresistance properties likely acquired before emergence. Additionally, the abundance of resistance genes among ST9 is likely attributed to the extensive use of antimicrobial agents in livestock.

Molecular Evolution and Adaptation of Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) Sequence Type 9

Fangyou Yu et al.

Summary: Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) sequence type 9 (ST9) has emerged and disseminated in Asia, with evidence of direct transmission of animal-adapted strains to human hosts. Genetic analysis suggests that ST9 originated from human-adapted strains and evolved through genetic events to adapt to animal hosts, acquiring animal-specific virulent factors and multidrug resistance genes. The rapid clonal expansion of multidrug-resistant ST9 strains in mainland China and Taiwan underscores the need for effective surveillance of antibiotic consumption in animal husbandry to control antimicrobial resistance spread.
