Evaluating the groundwater quality of Damodar Fan Delta (India) using fuzzy-AHP MCDM technique

Sadik Mahammad et al.

Summary: This study utilized the FAHP method to analyze the groundwater quality in the Damodar Fan Delta area in 2019, revealing issues such as excessive bicarbonate content. High concentrations of TDS, fluoride, chloride, and other substances were found in certain areas, while nitrate and sulfate levels were within acceptable limits across all sample wells.

Identification of the long-term variations of groundwater and their governing factors based on hydrochemical and isotopic data in a river basin

Ziyue Yin et al.

Summary: This study utilized self-organizing maps to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of groundwater hydrochemical characteristics in the Dagu River Basin. The results showed fluctuations in total dissolved solids and nitrate concentrations in the basin due to seasonal changes and environmental pollution interference. The study suggested that natural factors and human activities played vital roles in controlling the regional groundwater evolution.

Impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer, Western Saudi Arabia

Natarajan Rajmohan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of evaporation on groundwater salinity in the arid coastal aquifer in Al Lusub basin, Saudi Arabia using geochemical and statistical tools. Results showed that groundwater in the basin is brackish, with higher salinity in shallow wells compared to deeper ones. Through various analyses, it was confirmed that non-saline sources and processes, such as evaporation, reverse ion exchange, mineral dissolution, and wastewater infiltration, predominantly affected the water chemistry in this aquifer.

Quantification of surface water and groundwater salinity sources in irrigated lowland area of North China Plain

Xiaole Kong et al.

Summary: This study identified and quantified the factors influencing the salinity of surface water and shallow groundwater in the lowland area of the North China Plain. It found that evaporation and mineral dissolution were the main factors affecting surface water salinity in the dry season, while precipitation and surface runoff were the main factors in the rainy season. The study demonstrated the temporary decrease of salinity in canal water and shallow groundwater due to water transfer, and highlighted the significant impact of domestic sewage from rural areas on salinity increase in pond water and shallow groundwater.

Geochemical evolution and tracing of groundwater salinization using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical and geochemical modeling approaches in a typical semi-arid basin

Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical, and geochemical modeling approaches to understand groundwater evolution and trace salinization in semi-arid basin aquifers. Groundwater chemistry is primarily controlled by water-rock interaction, ion exchange reactions, weathering, salinization, and anthropogenic activities. The prevalence of salinization in the aquifer system, especially in the southwestern part of the basin, is revealed through different ionic ratio plots and spatial distribution maps.

Assessing the suitability of groundwater for irrigation in the light of natural forcing and anthropogenic influx: a study in the Gangetic West Bengal, India

Biplab Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the suitability of groundwater for agricultural use in Gangetic West Bengal, India, finding that most samples are suitable for agriculture, but some have high salinity issues and are unsuitable for agricultural use. Additionally, anthropogenic activities such as sand mining contribute to increased silicate weathering and irrigation hazards in certain areas.

Characterize groundwater vulnerability to intensive groundwater exploitation using tritium time-series and hydrochemical data in Shijiazhuang, North China Plain

Zhongshuang Cheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the deterioration of water quality in shallow groundwater systems is mainly influenced by groundwater vulnerability and its changes. Different distributions of groundwater MRTs and ion concentrations were observed in the shallow aquifer, indicating spatial variations. High concentrations of ions were mainly found in the western piedmont plain areas, suggesting susceptibility to human activities.
