Summary: This study demonstrated the significant effects of glycyrrhizin in reducing portal pressure, splanchnic inflow, portal-systemic collateral shunting, and mesenteric angiogenesis in cirrhotic rats. Although there was no significant impact on liver biochemistry and fibrosis, the treatment with glycyrrhizin at the stage of hepatic fibrosis effectively attenuated portal hypertension and portosystemic collateral shunting through the suppression of mesenteric angiogenesis by downregulating the VEGF signaling pathway.
