Comparison of the prevalence and molecular characteristics of fosA3 and fosA7 among Salmonella isolates from food animals in China

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and molecular characteristics of fosA3 and fosA7 among Salmonella isolates. The results showed that fosA7 and fosA3 exhibited different levels of resistance and distribution patterns in different strains. Additionally, fosA7 was found to enhance Salmonella survival under stress conditions. This study is important for understanding the mechanisms and molecular characteristics of fosfomycin resistance in Salmonella.

Distinct increase in antimicrobial resistance genes among Escherichia coli during 50 years of antimicrobial use in livestock production in China

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: Genomic analyses of Escherichia coli samples from livestock in China reveal a significant increase in the number of plasmids over the past 50 years, contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The study also found a doubling of antimicrobial resistance genes per isolate, including resistance to important drugs for both veterinary and human medicine. The increase in plasmids of various incompatibility groups acts as an effective means of spreading antimicrobial resistance genes.

Multidrug Resistance Dynamics in Salmonella in Food Animals in the United States: An Analysis of Genomes from Public Databases

Joao Pires et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of bacterial genomes in public databases presents opportunities to track antimicrobial resistance (AMR) trends. Using genomic data, it was found that resistance in nontyphoidal Salmonella varied among food animals in the United States, showing a decline in bovines and swine but an increase in poultry. Results from genomic surveillance were consistent with national surveillance data, indicating the potential for using genomes to monitor AMR trends in expanding sequencing capacities.

Genomic Characterization of Salmonella enterica Isolates From Retail Meat in Beijing, China

Na Lyu et al.

Summary: A comparative genomic analysis of 341 Salmonella enterica isolates from retail meat in sixteen districts of Beijing in 2017 revealed that the dominant serotype was S. Enteritidis, with prevalent phages including Salmonella phage 118970 sal3 and Gifsy-2. Various plasmid replicons such as IncFII(S), IncX1, and IncFIB(S) were common in these isolates. Additionally, a total of 88 different antimicrobial resistance genes were found in these isolates.

Evolutionary dynamics of multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- in Australia

Danielle J. Ingle et al.

Summary: Three distinct lineages of Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- have emerged in Australia, likely reflecting differential antimicrobial selection pressures, with two lineages associated with travel to South-East Asia and the third lineage endemic to Australia. These antimicrobial-resistant lineages efficiently infect and survive in host cells, suggesting a suppression of host immune response facilitating their persistence.

Identification of a Recently Dominant Sublineage in Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- Sequence Type 34 Isolated From Food Animals in Japan

Nobuo Arai et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the phylogenetic relationships and temporal information of 214 Salmonella Typhimurium/4,[5],12:i:- ST34/clade 9 strains isolated in Japan from 1998 to 2017, and found two sublineages: clade 9-2, which diverged from clade 9 in the early 2000s and has dominated in recent years. Clonally expanding subclades lacked certain prophages and some strains acquired plasmids encoding antimicrobial resistance genes.

Global Genomic Characterization of Salmonella enterica Serovar Telelkebir

Yu-feng Qiu et al.

Summary: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common cause of gastroenteritis, with the invasive infection caused by an infrequently reported serovar Telelkebir strain FJ001 in China carrying antimicrobial-resistant and typhoidtoxin genes. Genomic investigation revealed a high relatedness among global S. Telelkebir isolates, suggesting potential rapid transmissions through international travels. This study highlights the importance of surveillance and understanding the threat posed by the unique combination of virulent and antimicrobial-resistant determinants in NTS infections.
