Potassium in plants: Growth regulation, signaling, and environmental stress tolerance

Riya Johnson et al.

Summary: Potassium is an essential element for plant growth and development, playing a vital role in regulating various functions and providing resistance against abiotic stress. This article reviews the physiological functions of potassium in plants, including stomatal regulation, photosynthesis, and water uptake, as well as its role in detoxifying reactive oxygen species and conferring tolerance to abiotic stresses.

Regulatory Role of Circadian Clocks on ABA Production and Signaling, Stomatal Responses, and Water-Use Efficiency under Water-Deficit Conditions

Yousef Yari Kamrani et al.

Summary: Plants have molecular, physiological, and anatomical adaptations to cope with long-term water-deficit exposure, which are controlled by circadian clocks. The circadian clock regulates plants' responses to water deficiency, including the opening and closing of stomata, through the modulation of ABA. However, the interrelationship between circadian clock, ABA homeostasis, and signaling and water-deficit responses is not fully understood. This review hypothesizes that the circadian clock directs plants to modulate their responses and feedback mechanisms to ensure survival and enhance fitness under drought conditions.

Tolerance of Japanese larch to drought is modified by nitrogen and water regimes during cultivation of container seedlings

Mitsutoshi Kitao et al.

Summary: To improve the drought tolerance of container seedlings of Japanese larch, adequate nitrogen supply and limited water supply are crucial. Higher leaf nitrogen decreases photosynthetic and photochemical efficiency, impairing drought tolerance. Conversely, lower shoot biomass and leaf nitrogen can delay soil drying and reduce photoinhibition.

Impacts of Drought Stress and Mycorrhizal Inoculation on the Performance of Two Spring Wheat Cultivars

Caroline Pons et al.

Summary: Cereal production is facing challenges due to climate change. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are believed to alleviate drought effects and enhance nutrient uptake in plants. This study investigated the impacts of drought and mycorrhiza on the growth and allocation patterns of spring wheat. The results showed that mycorrhiza can improve water use efficiency and harvest index, but cannot mitigate the effects of drought. This highlights the complexity of responses to challenging environments in highly domesticated species.

Ectomycorrhizae determine chestnut seedling growth and drought response

Pabitra Aryal et al.

Summary: Chestnut could be a possible multipurpose agroforestry crop in erodible locations in the Midwestern US, and ectomycorrhizal colonization plays a crucial role in tree establishment and stress tolerance. The study showed that ECM inoculation increased seedling biomass and improved water stress response in chestnut trees, suggesting the importance of including ECM colonization in field plantings to reduce reliance on agricultural amendments.

Enhancing potassium content in leaves and stems improves drought tolerance of eucalyptus clones

Elcio Ferreira Santos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potassium dynamic nutrition in eucalyptus in response to soil-K and -water availabilities, finding that eucalyptus clones with sufficient potassium were able to maintain biomass accumulation under severe drought conditions compared to those with low potassium levels. The importance of potassium nutrition in maintaining leaf photochemical processes was highlighted, showing positive correlations between potassium use efficiency and electron transport rate through photosystem II in plants grown in low potassium conditions. Management strategies should focus on enhancing potassium nutrition to optimize water-use efficiencies and photosynthesis.

Effects of nitrogen fertilization and drought on hydrocyanic acid accumulation and morpho-physiological parameters of sorghums

Abd El Salam Abd El Shehab et al.

Summary: Nitrogen fertilization can increase sorghum yield and quality, but also lead to hydrocyanic acid accumulation, especially under drought conditions. Results showed that under drought stress, nitrogen application led to an increase in HCN content, impacting plant growth and physiological parameters. It was found that 90 kg N ha(-1) might be the most suitable nitrogen application rate for sorghums under drought conditions.

Enhanced Summer Planting Survival of Japanese Larch Container-Grown Seedlings

Hisanori Harayama et al.

Summary: The study found that drought hardening and the use of JFA-150 containers significantly improved the survival rate of Japanese larch seedlings. The application of antitranspirant also proved to be effective in increasing survival. High-potassium fertilization, on the other hand, did not show a significant impact on seedling survival.
