Summary: According to a recent United Nations report, 68% of the global population will live in cities by 2050, particularly in developing countries in the Global South. This poses new challenges for urban studies, which need to develop new methodologies for analyzing sustainability and resilience. This study aims to evaluate the sustainability and functional states of existing buildings in a specific area of the historic Valdivia city center in southern Chile, and propose intervention strategies to improve the resilience of cultural heritage buildings and their surroundings.

Analyzing the impact of Low Emission Zones on modal shift

Summary: Research on the implementation of the Madrid Central LEZ has shown a significant decrease in car use and promotion of cleaner modes of transportation, contributing to reducing air pollution. Modal shift is mainly associated with socio-demographic variables, individual perceptions towards LEZs, and mobility habits, while attitudinal variables are found to be irrelevant for explaining modal shift.

Jane Jacobs reloaded: A contemporary operationalization of urban vitality in a district in Barcelona

Summary: This study revisits the principles of Jane Jacobs and develops an updated index to measure urban vitality in a low-income district in Barcelona. The results show that urban vitality can be found in a variety of urban spaces when certain conditions are met, highlighting the importance of human activity and density. The methodological tool developed in this study can serve as a basis for future research and guide public policies addressing contemporary urban challenges.

How to link sustainability assessments with local governance? - Connecting indicators to institutions and controversies

Summary: The concept of sustainability is gaining importance in local urban governance, and indicator-based assessments are being used to operationalize it. This article proposes an assessment approach that embeds indicators within their socio-political and institutional contexts to enhance its value for local governance. The approach is applied to the assessment of the housing system in Geneva, Switzerland, revealing critical issues and connecting them to ongoing controversies and stakeholders. The study demonstrates that this approach provides a richer understanding of the challenges and offers better support for local governance stakeholders.

Urban Equity as a Challenge for the Southern Europe Historic Cities: Sustainability-Urban Morphology Interrelation through GIS Tools

Sustainability Assessment through Urban Accessibility Indicators and GIS in a Middle-Sized World Heritage City: The Case of Caceres, Spain

Summary: The research aims to quantify the degree of sustainability in terms of accessibility to public services in the city of Caceres using GIS tools and urban indicators. The results indicate that the city has good sustainability in terms of accessibility to various public services, but improvements are needed in areas such as bike parking, clothing and oil collection, and sports centers. The study also highlights the similarity in results between the Historic Centre and the entire city, regardless of the historical significance. This research addresses some gaps in the topic, but it is limited by the need for a substantial amount of initial data. The use of urban indicators for sustainability analysis is considered valuable for local managers and a practical planning tool for medium-sized cities.

Defining a procedure to identify key sustainability indicators in Spanish urban systems: Development and application

Summary: In this study, the sustainability of 31 Spanish cities was evaluated using Classification And Regression Trees (CART) and Random Forest, identifying key indicators and corresponding thresholds for defining a sustainable city. The results showed that urban sustainability can be accurately assessed using just three indicators, providing valuable information for policymakers without the need for extensive data compilation.
