The virtualization of human-robot interactions: a user-centric workload assessment

Federica Nenna et al.

Summary: This study aimed to systematically evaluate human-robot collaboration from a user-centric perspective. The findings showed that collaborating with a virtual robot resulted in shorter operation times and lower implicit workload compared to a physical robot. Additionally, the advantages of virtual collaboration were most evident when high precision was required.

Utility of optical see-through head mounted displays in augmented reality-assisted surgery: A systematic review

Manuel Birlo et al.

Summary: This article presents a systematic review of the usage of optical see-through head mounted display (OST-HMD) in augmented reality (AR) surgery applications from 2013 to 2020. The study revealed that the Microsoft HoloLens is increasingly dominating the field, with orthopaedic surgery as the most popular application. Surgical guidance is the most common context, and segmented preoperative models are the dominant visualization method. Human factors play a significant role in the utility of OST-HMD.

Individual differences in pupil dilation to others' emotional and neutral eyes with varying pupil sizes

Christine Fawcett et al.

Summary: Sensitivity to others' emotional signals is crucial for social interaction. Pupil dilation, which can indicate arousal, can also affect observers through pupillary contagion. However, the interaction between pupil size and emotional expression is still unclear.

The Influence of Gaming Experience, Gender and Other Individual Factors on Robot Teleoperations in VR

Federica Nenna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of individual factors on the performance and perceived workload of driving a robot. The results showed that driving the robot via controller buttons was influenced by individual factors, while driving it through physical actions was not. These findings have important implications for adopting more natural ways of human-robot interaction.

Privacy-Friendly De-authentication with BLUFADE: Blurred Face Detection

Matteo Cardaioli et al.

Summary: The importance of the de-authentication phase in secure user sessions is often underestimated. Existing automated de-authentication systems fail to provide a balance between security, privacy, and usability. This research proposes BLUFADE, a de-authentication system that uses blurred faces to protect user privacy. Experimental results show that BLUFADE outperforms state-of-the-art methods in detecting blurred faces and effectively de-authenticates users with high accuracy in under 3 seconds, meeting security, privacy, and usability requirements.

Augmented Reality as a research tool: investigating cognitive-motor dual-task during outdoor navigation

Federica Nenna et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of multitasking on cognitive and motor performance when responding to AR holograms outdoors. It found that Cognitive-Motor Interference (CMI) was present under dual-task conditions, as well as a discrepancy between subjective and objective assessments of mental load. These results suggest that attentional load induced by multitasking can impact behavior in navigating the real world, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue in daily life tasks.
