Biodegradation Kinetics of Fragrances, Plasticizers, UV Filters, and PAHs in a Mixture-Changing Test Concentrations over 5 Orders of Magnitude

Heidi Birch et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of mixture concentrations on biodegradation kinetics of organic chemicals and microbial community dynamics. Results showed that high mixture concentrations delayed the biodegradation of some substances and altered the degradation order of chemicals. This suggests that environmentally relevant biodegradation data may not be accurately determined with excessively high concentrations.

Moving persistence assessments into the 21st century: A role for weight-of-evidence and overall persistence

Aaron D. Redman et al.

Summary: Assessing the persistence of chemicals in the environment is crucial for protecting human health and ecosystems, but existing evaluation schemes may lead to inaccurate assessments. Developing flexible and comprehensive evaluation frameworks, along with a weight-of-evidence approach, is necessary. The current research aims to develop an integrated assessment framework for a more thorough evaluation of persistence using multimedia approaches and a clear WoE approach.

Scientific concepts and methods for moving persistence assessments into the 21st century

Russell Davenport et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenges and limitations facing current methods for evaluating the persistence of chemical substances and the scientific advances that are helping to address these issues. The advancements mentioned include a deeper understanding of microbial composition, benchmarking tools and reference substances, analytical methods for quantification at environmentally relevant concentrations, modeling tools for predicting microbial biotransformation, and modeling approaches for deriving more generally applicable biotransformation rate constants. However, the translation of these advancements into regulatory practice and the development of new OECD test guidelines need improvement and acceleration.

Temperature, phytoplankton density and bacteria diversity drive the biotransformation of micropollutants in a lake ecosystem

Annie Chalifour et al.

Summary: This study empirically determined the biotransformation rate constants for 35 micropollutants in a meso-eutrophic lake and found that 14 of them showed biotransformation at least once. The rate constants varied significantly between seasons and compounds, with transformation mostly influenced by temperature, phytoplankton density, and bacterial diversity. Specific microorganisms were found to play a key role in the transformation of certain micropollutants.

Methodological Advances to Study Contaminant Biotransformation: New Prospects for Understanding and Reducing Environmental Persistence?

Kathrin Fenner et al.

Summary: Complex microbial communities in environmental systems play a crucial role in detoxifying chemical contaminants by transforming them into less harmful forms, but understanding of biotransformation processes for emerging contaminants at low concentrations is still limited. Advanced approaches to reducing environmental exposure to contaminants will rely on understanding the links between contaminant removal, key driving agents of biotransformation at low concentrations, and environmental conditions affecting microbial presence and activity.

Biotransformation of Chemicals at the Water-Sediment InterfaceToward a Robust Simulation Study Setup

Carolin Seller et al.

Summary: The study found that improvements in the biotransformation test system resulted in better repeatability, observability and consistency in studying the biotransformation of various compounds. By analyzing different cell densities and diversities, it was revealed that microbial communities in sediment were more stable with higher cell type diversity.
