Development of forest discourses across Europe: A longitudinal perspective

Peter Edwards et al.

Summary: This paper examines forest discourses in Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Sweden since World War II, finding thematic overlap in post-war efforts to restore forest resources but diverging ideas and practices in subsequent periods. Recently, national discourses in these countries have refocused on the environment and the bioeconomy.

Are silvicultural subsidies an effective payment for ecosystem services in Slovakia?

Klara Balikova et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the recently implemented Forestry Support for Fulfilling Non-productive Forest Functions (FSfNPFF) program in Slovakia. The findings reveal implementation gaps and lack of evidence to quantify the support of ecosystem services.

Ecosystem services from urban forests: The case of Oslomarka, Norway

Elisabeth Cornelia Berglihn et al.

Summary: This study conducts a comprehensive assessment of ecosystem services in the emblematic forest surrounding Oslo, Norway's capital city, revealing historical drivers, service types, and trends. It shows a decline in provisioning and habitat services, an increase in carbon sequestration and storage, and an overall increase and changes in cultural services.

Volume increment and carbon dynamics in boreal forest when extending the rotation length towards biologically old stands

Jogeir N. Stokland

Summary: This study found that in old boreal forests in Norway, volume increment remains stable and natural mortality is low beyond the economically optimal rotation length. Stands with satisfactory stocking have volume increment equal to or higher than managed stands harvested at recommended rotation length, while poorly stocked stands have inferior volume increment.
