A review on the fatigue cracking of twin boundaries: Crystallographic orientation and stacking fault energy

Linlin Li et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the profound understanding of fatigue cracking mechanisms of various twin boundaries (TBs). Factors such as grain orientations, stacking fault energy, and interface structure have significant influences on the fatigue cracking behaviors of TBs. This knowledge provides important guidance for enhancing the fatigue performance of materials through interfacial design.

On the mechanism of fatigue crack initiation in high-angle grain boundaries

Veronika Mazanova et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the mechanism of fatigue crack initiation in high-angle grain boundaries is controversial. In this research, experiments were conducted on super-austenitic stainless steel Sanicro 25 to study the surface features that developed during cyclic loading with high strain amplitudes. The results revealed the presence of slip markings on the surface of grains, as well as extrusions and intrusions along the surface and normal to the grain boundaries. These processes ultimately weakened the grain boundary and led to the production of grain boundary cracks. These experimental findings challenge the theories suggesting a brittle-like origin of grain boundary cracks.

Intergranular fatigue crack initiation in polycrystalline copper

Alice Chlupova et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue behavior and initiation mechanism of intergranular cracks in polycrystalline copper specimens were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the crack formation on the electrolytically polished specimen surfaces, and a correlation was found between the occurrence of extrusions and intrusions on the grain boundaries and the formation of corrugated surface near the intergranular cracks. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the fatigue behavior and initiation mechanism of intergranular cracks in polycrystalline copper.

Crystallography and elastic anisotropy in fatigue crack nucleation at nickel alloy twin boundaries

Xiaoxian Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on investigation of fatigue crack nucleation at annealing twin boundaries (TBs) in polycrystal nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT, it was found that elastic anisotropy plays a key role in driving local elastic constraint and slip activation, leading to TBs being preferential sites for crack nucleation. The crystallographic orientation of parent grain/twin pair also plays a crucial role in slip activation and fatigue crack nucleation, with the most damaging parent grain orientations identified.
