Mechanical properties, thermal conductivity and defect formation energies of samarium immobilization in Gd2Zr2O7: First-principles study and irradiation experiment

Summary: A density functional theory (DFT) study was conducted to investigate various properties of (Gd1-xSmx)2Zr2O7, including mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, Debye temperature, electronic structure, and defect chemistry. The compounds exhibited excellent structural and mechanical stability, with (Gd0.25Sm0.75)2Zr2O7 showing the lowest Young's modulus, highest Possion's ratio, lowest Debye temperature, and lowest thermal conductivity. The study also examined the formation energies of various defects and observed that Sm-doped Gd2Zr2O7, especially GdSmZr2O7, exhibited improved irradiation tolerance. Furthermore, after ion irradiation, the crystal structure of GdSmZr2O7 transformed from pyrochlore to a defect fluorite without amorphous phase.

Microstructure and electrical properties of new high-entropy rare-earth zirconates

Summary: A series of new high-entropy rare-earth zirconates were synthesized using a solid-state reaction method, and their crystal structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were studied. The high-entropy rare-earth zirconates exhibited a single-phase pyrochlore structure with high relative density and fine grain sizes. Among them, (Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2)(2)Zr2O7 showed excellent electrical conductivity at 1073K.

Probing the Short-Range Ordering of Ion Irradiated Gd2Ti2-yZryO7 (0.0=y=2.0) Pyrochlore under Electronic Stopping Regime

Summary: A series of Gd2Ti2-yZryO7 solid solutions were synthesized and their structural and irradiation-induced changes were investigated using Raman spectroscopy. The results showed phase transformation in Zr-rich compositions, with dominant irradiation-driven phase transformation due to cation disordering. Raman spectroscopy was found to be capable of observing smaller irradiation-induced disordered ion tracks compared to XRD analysis.

Simultaneous coloration erasure and significant photoluminescence enhancement via vacuum re-annealing in lanthanide-doped transparent ceramics

Summary: In this work, a simple and efficient route for the coloration erasure and significant photoluminescence enhancement of lanthanide-doped transparent ceramics was developed. The full-band high transparency and efficient luminescence of YZO:Tb and YZO:Pr ceramics were achieved through air annealing plus vacuum re-annealing processes. The proposed defect clusters [Ln(Y)(4+)-O2--Ln(Y)(4+)] and [Ln(Y)(4+)-e'] provide insights into the relevant reaction mechanisms. The vacuum re-annealing strategy opens up a path towards controllably tailoring the optical properties of lanthanide-doped highly transparent ceramics.
