Structural and electronic properties of NbN/GaN junctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy

John G. Wright et al.

Summary: We investigate the structural and electronic properties of NbN/GaN junctions grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High-quality NbN films grown on GaN exhibit superconductivity with critical temperatures above 10 K, even at thicknesses as low as 3 nm. We find that the NbN lattice follows the stacking sequence of the underlying GaN, with domain boundaries occurring at the atomic steps on the GaN surface. Through Schottky barrier diode measurements, we determine the barrier height of the NbN/GaN junction to be 1.3 eV.

Niobium oxides films on GaN: Photoelectron spectroscopy study

R. Lewandkow et al.

Summary: Non-stoichiometric niobium oxides were grown on p-GaN(0001) substrates using physical vapor deposition, and non-insulating fractions were eliminated through oxygen-ion implantation and annealing, resulting in insulator films composed mostly of Nb2O5 compound. The band offsets at the Nb2O5/GaN interface were determined using XPS and UPS characterization.

Superconducting niobium nitride: a perspective from processing, microstructure, and superconducting property for single photon detectors

Nicholas Cucciniello et al.

Summary: In this article, we discuss the superconducting properties of niobium nitride (NbN) films and their relationships with material properties, processing parameters, device architectures, and performance. We also highlight the latest progress in optimizing the performance parameters of NbN-based superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs).

Interface study of thermally driven chemical kinetics involved in Ti/Si3N4 based metal-substrate assembly by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Sachin Yadav et al.

Summary: Diffusion mediated interaction between metal-substrate assembly at high temperature annealing can lead to the formation of new composite materials. The binary composites of titanium nitride and silicide are observed on sputtered grown Ti films on Si3N4/Si substrate during high vacuum annealing process at temperatures 650 degrees C and above, with the maximum silicide formation observed at 780 degrees C.

Properties of Bare and Thin-Film-Covered GaN(0001) Surfaces

Milosz Grodzicki

Summary: This paper summarizes the surface properties of bare and film-covered gallium nitride (GaN) in wurtzite form, (0001) oriented, and the different behaviors of the thin films under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Metal films form surface alloys with gallium, while semimetal layers easily evaporate from the surface, but the layer in direct contact with the substrate may react with it and modify the surface properties.

Unexplored MBE growth mode reveals new properties of superconducting NbN

John Wright et al.

Summary: Accessing unexplored crystal growth conditions can reveal new physical behaviors, as demonstrated in this study on NbN superconductor growth. By growing the material at temperatures above 1000 degrees C, a unique growth mode was discovered, leading to atomically smooth surfaces and normal metal resistivities. Furthermore, unexpected electronic structure observations, such as the reversal of the Hall coefficient, were made during the study.

Transition metal nitride electrodes as future energy storage devices: A review

Memona Idrees et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for portable electronic devices, renewable energy products, and electronic vehicles have led to a growing interest in electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices. Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) and their composites show superior EES properties due to increased active sites, enhanced electrochemical stability, and improved ion and electron transport, making them ideal electrode materials for a broad range of EES devices.
