The boundary integral equation for curved solid/liquid interfaces propagating into a binary liquid with convection

E. A. Titova et al.

Summary: In this paper, the boundary integral method for unsteady solid/liquid interfaces propagating into undercooled binary liquids with convection is developed. A single integrodifferential equation for the interface function is derived using the Green function technique. In the limiting cases, the obtained unsteady convective boundary integral equation transforms into a previously developed theory. This integral is simplified for the steady-state growth in arbitrary curvilinear coordinates when the solid/liquid interface is isothermal (isoconcentration). Finally, the boundary integral for a binary melt with a forced flow is evaluated, and the dependence of the melt undercooling on Peclet and Reynolds numbers is analyzed.

Shape functions for dendrite tips of SCN and Si

L. Toropova

Summary: In this work, an analytical theory describing the growth of dendrite tips in undercooled melts without convection is tested against experimental data of succinonitrile (SCN) and Si. The results show that the recently discovered shape function accurately describes the region of the dendrite tip up to a certain distance from its vertex.

Analysis of the boundary integral equation for the growth of a parabolic/paraboloidal dendrite with convection

E. A. Titova et al.

Summary: The growth of parabolic/paraboloidal dendrite in an undercooled melt is analyzed using the boundary integral equation. The melt undercooling is found to be practically the same for viscous and potential flows with small Prandtl number, but substantially different for water solutions and non-metallic alloys. A simpler potential flow model can be used to study the solidification of undercooled metals with convection.

Dynamical law of the phase interface motion in the presence of crystals nucleation

Liubov Toropova et al.

Summary: In this paper, a theory of solid/liquid phase interface motion in an undercooled melt with nucleation and crystal growth is developed. The set of integrodifferential kinetic, heat and mass transfer equations are analytically solved to describe the two-phase and liquid layers separated by the moving phase transition interface. The main result is the propagation law of the phase interface, which is affected by crystal nucleation. The nucleation and crystal growth processes emit latent crystallization heat, reducing the melt undercooling and constraining the thickness of the two-phase layer.

A Stable Mode of Dendritic Growth in Cases of Conductive and Convective Heat and Mass Transfer

Liubov Toropova et al.

Summary: In this paper, a theory of stable dendritic growth in undercooled melts with conductive and convective boundary conditions is developed. The analytical theory is constructed by separately considering the conductive and convective mechanisms. The laws for total undercooling and selection criteria for stable growth mode are derived for each mechanism. The case of simultaneous occurrence of these heat and mass transfer mechanisms is also studied by combining the conductive and convective laws using power stitching functions. The generalized selection theory is validated through comparison with experimental data for Al24Ge76 and Ti45Al55 undercooled melts.

Convective and conductive selection criteria of a stable dendritic growth and their stitching

L. Toropova et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the analysis of stable thermo-solutal dendritic growth in the presence of intense convection, taking into account the n-fold symmetry of crystalline anisotropy and two- and three-dimensional growth geometries. A new stability criterion is derived and combined with an existing one to describe a broader undercooling range. The stitched selection criterion proves to accurately describe a wide range of experimental undercoolings.
