Achievements and Future Perspectives of the Trivalent Thulium-Ion-Doped Mixed-Sesquioxide Ceramics for Laser Applications

Angela Pirri et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the latest results of solid-state lasers based on thulium-doped mixed-sesquioxide ceramics, discussing their applications in various fields and the optical and thermal properties of the ceramics. The manuscript also compares the performance of these ceramics with corresponding crystals.

Spectroscopy and 2.1 μm laser operation of Czochralski- grown Tm3+:YScO3 crystals

Anna Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study reports on the growth, temperature-dependent spectroscopy, and laser experiments of Tm3+-doped YScO3 mixed sesquioxide crystals. Laser quality Tm3+:YScO3 crystals with different doping levels were successfully grown, and the structural disorder in the mixed crystals allows for broad and smooth spectral features even at cryogenic temperatures. Continuous wave laser operation in the 2.1μm range was achieved using these crystals, demonstrating their potential for efficient ultrafast pulse generation.

Spectroscopic investigation and laser behaviour of Yb-doped laser ceramics based on mixed crystalline structure (ScxY1-x)2O3

Angela Pirri et al.

Summary: The spectroscopic and laser characterization of Yb-doped (ScxY1-x)(2)O-3 ceramics revealed the influence of Sc3+ content on energy level lifetime, absorption, and emission cross sections, as well as the shifting of Yb3+ emission peaks towards longer wavelengths with increased Sc3+ content. Laser tests showed good performance, with a broad tuning range achieved in one compositionally disordered Yb-doped ceramic sample.

Continuously tuned (Tm0.05Sc0.252Y0.698)2O3 ceramic laser with emission peak at 2076 nm

Angela Pirri et al.

Summary: In this study, the first laser action of a (Tm0.05Sc0.252Y0.698)2O3 ceramic sample was reported, achieving an output power of 1.24 W at 2076 nm when pumped at 793 nm. Absorption spectra at various temperatures were measured, with absorption coefficients and emission cross sections calculated accordingly. The ceramic material showed a tuning range of 181 nm.
