Convergence-confinement analysis for tunnels with combined bolt-cable system considering the effects of intermediate principal stress

Zhenyu Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical responses of tunnels reinforced by a combined bolt-cable system. An analytical model is proposed to simulate the installation of bolts and cables and the effects of intermediate principal stress. The model is divided into three stages and different forms during the bolt-rock interaction and after cable installation are categorized. The proposed model is validated through numerical simulations and is shown to provide a convenient alternative tool for the design of tunnels using the combined bolt-cable system.

A variational approach to the analysis of excavation-induced vertical deformation in a segmental tunnel

Shengfeng Huang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a model for evaluating the deformation of a segmental tunnel induced by upper basement excavation. The vertical displacement of the tunnel is approximated using a finite Fourier series. By deriving energy balance equations and using the variational approach, expressions for various deformations of the tunnel are obtained. The validation results show that the proposed model can effectively estimate the responses of a segmental tunnel to upper excavation. A parametric analysis is also conducted to examine the effects of different factors on the tunnel's responses to upper deep excavation.

Analytical solutions for deep tunnels in strain-softening rocks modeled by different elastic strain definitions with the unified strength theory

Sun ZhenYu et al.

Summary: This paper presents analytical solutions for the responses of tunnels in rock masses with strain-softening behavior. The effect of the intermediate principal stress on the rock behavior was considered using the unified strength theory. The proposed solutions were compared with numerical simulations, model tests, and existing solutions, showing significant influence of the intermediate principal stress coefficient on tunnel displacements, stress fields, and plastic radii. Parametric studies revealed the importance of evaluating existing models in tunnels constructed through average-quality rocks.

An analytical model for face stability of tunnels traversing the fault fracture zone with high hydraulic pressure

Kaihang Han et al.

Summary: A new three-dimensional limit equilibrium model is proposed to address the issue of tunnel face stability traversing the fault fracture zone with high hydraulic pressure, taking into account the influence of geological interface. By modifying the existing formula and conducting comparisons with numerical simulations, the proposed trapezoid-prism model shows promising predictive results.

The angle for setting foot reinforcement bolt based on the failure mode of shallow tunnel in loess

H. Y. Zhu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the effect of installation angle of foot reinforcement bolts (FRB) on settlement at tunnel vault in loess. A mechanical calculation model was proposed and verified through field tests and finite element simulation, showing that FRBs at 47 degrees have the best effect in controlling settlement.

Tunnel Behaviour Caused by Basement Excavation in Clay

Huasheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of consolidation on tunnel response to excavation using three-dimensional coupled-consolidation finite element analyses. The results showed that basement excavation led to stress release, causing tunnel heave, and the longer consolidation time increased tunnel heave and tunnel diameter change. The results provide valuable engineering reference for analyzing soil structure problems in clay.

Numerical simulation and analysis of the pile underpinning technology used in shield tunnel crossings on bridge pile foundations

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated stress transfer mechanisms in pile foundations during underpinning processes in urban areas and analyzed the influence of shield tunnel construction on pile stability. The results showed that underpinned piles can effectively transfer overlying loads and settlement and deformation during underpinning and tunnel excavation can improve pile tip resistance and reduce maximum principal stress. The deformation of bridge pile foundations and segment lining structures of shield tunnels mainly occur near the underpinning area, with settlement deformation being the primary form of deformation.
