A review on mechanical-based microalgae harvesting methods for biofuel production

Mahyar Ghazvini et al.

Summary: Microalgae have great potential as a feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of harvesting makes their utilization economically unfeasible. Mechanical-based harvesting methods, such as centrifugation and filtration, are considered effective means of microalgae recovery, but they differ in terms of cost and efficiency. Centrifugation offers the highest cell removal efficiency but comes with the highest capital and operational costs, while sedimentation is relatively inexpensive and widely applicable. However, flotation needs to be combined with filtration, and may not be suitable for all algal cultures.

Microalgae biomass concentration and reuse of water as new cultivation medium using ceramic membrane filtration

Francesco Ricceri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve microalgae dewatering by using ceramic membrane filtration technology while simultaneously reusing water as a new cultivation medium. Different algae species showed variations in flux values and organic matter removal rates depending on the membrane pore size and cake layer properties, possibly due to differences in cell size and shape. All combinations exhibited almost complete algae cell rejections and high nutrient passage rates. When the permeate streams were used for new growth cycles, Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella sorokiniana showed the fastest growth rates, comparable to those observed with fresh media.
