Measurement of Sub-Surface Microstructures Based on a Developed Ultrasonic Atomic Force Microscopy

Yuyang Wang et al.

Summary: Accurate and non-destructive technology for detecting subsurface defects is important in ultra-precision machining and component applications. Combining acoustic detection with atomic force microscopy (AFM) allows for high-resolution measurement of subsurface structures. This study establishes a contact-resonance AFM (CR-AFM) system that differs from commercially available instruments. Using this system, sub-surface silicon samples with grating structures and covered by varying depths of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) are detected. Simulations and experiments are conducted to study the influence of burial depth on detection capability. The results confirm that the proposed method can effectively reveal sub-surface microstructures with relatively large buried depths.

Exploring Nanomechanical Properties of Soot Particle Layers by Atomic Force Microscopy Nanoindentation

Gianluigi De Falco et al.

Summary: This study conducted an experimental investigation on the nanomechanical properties of flame-formed carbonaceous particle layers using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for the first time. The experimental procedure involved a combination of semi-contact and contact AFM imaging, as well as AFM force spectroscopy. Results discussed the hardness and Young's modulus values obtained from AFM measurements for different soot particle films.
