Numerical study on stability of lignosulphonate-based stabilized surficial layer of unsaturated expansive soil slope considering hydro-mechanical effect

Nauman Ijaz et al.

Summary: Numerous laboratory-based solutions have been proposed for stabilizing unsaturated expansive soil by recycling lignosulphonate. However, practical assessments are required for treating rainfall-induced surficial failure in unsaturated expansive soil slopes. The stability of LS-treated surficial layer requires consideration of the hydro-mechanical effect. Among LS-based stabilizers, composite cementing admixture (CCA) provides the safest critical factor of safety for slope stability while mitigating the heave problem.

Field instrumentation for real-time measurement of soil-water characteristic curve

Abdul Halim Hamdany et al.

Summary: Suction measurement plays a vital role in unsaturated soil analysis, but it remains challenging due to limited measurement range, cavitation, and long equilibrium time. In this study, a new sensor called NTU osmotic tensiometer was developed to measure soil suction in real-time and with long-term stability. The performance of the NTU osmotic tensiometer was comparable to traditional methods and could measure higher ranges of soil suction.

Recycling of paper/wood industry waste for hydromechanical stability of expansive soils: A novel approach

Nauman Ijaz et al.

Summary: This article presents a sustainable solution to repurpose paper/wood industry waste as a geotechnical construction material by using a lignosulphonate (LS)-based composite admixture (CA). The study focuses on solving construction problems related to expansive soils, addressing issues such as water infiltration and volumetric change behavior. The research demonstrates that LS-based CA treatment improves the water holding capacity and stability of expansive soils, providing a scientific basis for its pragmatic use in the field.

Soil-Water Characteristics and Creep Deformation of Unsaturated Expansive Subgrade Soil: Experimental Test and Simulation

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The study focused on the stability of unsaturated expansive soil subgrade considering rainfall and creep behavior. Results showed that the compaction degree and stress state of the soil were closely related to its water holding capacity. The nonlinearity of creep behavior became increasingly obvious with time and stress level.

Three-dimensional slope stability analysis incorporating unsaturated soil properties in Singapore

Sabrina C. Y. Ip et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced slope failures often occur in residual soils during or after torrential rainfall, and in Singapore, these soils are generally unsaturated due to the deep groundwater table. This study utilized ordinary kriging to estimate spatial distributions of saturated and unsaturated soil properties, and conducted seepage analysis using TRIGRS to assess three-dimensional slope stability. The majority of the investigated zone exhibited high factors of safety, with only a small percentage associated with very low factors of safety.
