Particle breakage behavior of a foundation filling material on island-reefs in the South China Sea under impact loading

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of coarse-particle content (CC) and impact energy (E-b) on particle breakage in calcareous sand (CS). The results show that CS particle breakage during impact testing increases the fractal dimension (alpha). The ultimate fractal dimension of CS under impact loading is only influenced by its initial fractal dimension. A mathematical model is developed to predict the alpha of CS based on its initial median particle size and E-b. The relative breakage ratio (Br) of CS increases logarithmically with increasing CC and hyperbolically with increasing E-b. The relationship between alpha and Br is established for CS under impact loading.

Particle breakage mechanism and particle shape evolution of calcareous sand under impact loading

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: Exploring the meso-fabric characteristics of calcareous sand is crucial for predicting its macro-mechanical responses under impact loading. This study conducted multiple impact tests on calcareous sand and found that the particles of size 2-5 mm showed the largest breakage extent. Particle breakage was mainly caused by breakoff and abrasion. The particle size obtained from particle shape scanning tests was smaller than that from sieving tests due to different measuring principles and irregular particle shape. The relative change ratio of the particle shape parameter was proposed to quantify variations in particle shapes with increasing number of impact tests, revealing that particle shapes became increasingly regular with particle breakage.

Characterization of the mechanical and physical properties of unstabilized rammed earth: A review

Fernando Avila et al.

Summary: The construction sector is increasingly focusing on sustainable development, using locally available materials like rammed earth to reduce environmental impact. Research shows that compressive strength is the most representative parameter for rammed earth, while tensile and shear strength are low and require further investigation.

Experimental Campaigns on Mechanical Properties and Seismic Performance of Unstabilized Rammed Earth-A Literature Review

Ana Peric et al.

Summary: Earthen architecture plays a significant role in both residential architecture and cultural heritage worldwide, providing homes for over half of the global population and commonly found in seismic areas. Many countries lack standards for rammed earth structures, and experimental research is crucial in developing new design guidelines. This study focuses on unstabilized rammed earth, providing new knowledge and recommendations for further research to enhance earthquake-resilient construction practices.
