Assessment of 3D Models Placement Methods in Augmented Reality

Summary: Augmented reality (AR) has proven to be efficient in the architecture, engineering, construction and operation (AECO) domain, especially when integrated with building information modeling (BIM). However, the precision and accuracy of placing virtual 3D models in an AR environment can be a challenge. This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate different AR placement methods quantitatively and qualitatively, focusing on their usability in the AECO context. Results show a wide range of placement errors in AR, with marker-based methods performing better than others. Commercial solutions using placement sensors show good performance in manual mode, but lower accuracy and stability in automatic mode.
