Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) products and systems: A review of energy-related behavior

Nuria Martin-Chivelet et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the energy-related features of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules and systems, including thermal, solar, optical, and electrical aspects. Further standardization is needed to evaluate the heat transfer and solar heat gain of BIPV modules. The optical properties of BIPV modules play a role in balancing energy saving, electricity generation, aesthetics, and visual comfort. Architecturally adapted BIPV design may reduce the efficiency of modules and systems compared to standard photovoltaic ones. Special operating conditions of BIPV systems complicate electrical design and performance forecasting.

A Review of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics in Singapore: Status, Barriers, and Prospects

Tianyi Chen et al.

Summary: Energy consumption increase leads to higher carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse effect, contributing to global warming. Buildings worldwide consume one-third of total energy, prompting the need for efficient technologies such as Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) for zero energy buildings. This research focuses on the tropical green building concept in Singapore, assessing the potential of solar photovoltaic energy and strategies for BIPV adoption, while considering life cycle assessment and industry standards. The findings aim to guide Singapore's decision on BIPV technology adoption.

Mandatory Policy, Innovations and the Renewable Energy Debate: A Case Study on Building Integrated Photovoltaics

Daniel Efurosibina Attoye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the challenges of adopting innovations in buildings and renewable energy technology, highlighting the conflicts between the need for innovation and the financial burden and complex adoption processes. Through interviews with residents in the UAE, the study focuses on the limited adoption of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) and identifies multiple barriers to its adoption. The findings also reveal a debate between proponents of mandatory policies for innovation adoption and those who argue that these policies are ineffective due to existing barriers. To address this debate, the study proposes a systematic approach with specific drivers and supporting policies to guide a stakeholder-driven renewable energy transition.
