Optimal Condition-Based Mission Abort Decisions

Qingan Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mission abort policies of safety-critical mission-based systems, such as aircraft and submarines, to enhance their survivability. The mission abort decisions are considered in a two-stage degradation process, aiming to minimize the expected total cost of mission failure and system failure. The study also evaluates heuristic policies and formulates a joint optimization problem to determine the optimal mission abort policy and investment for delaying system deterioration.

Risk Control of Mission-Critical Systems: Abort Decision-Makings Integrating Health and Age Conditions

Li Yang et al.

Summary: This article explores how to design mission abort policies in order to balance the possibility of mission success and system survivability in a mission environment. By considering the degradation degree of monitored health features and system age, operators can abort the mission at early system ages if the degradation reaches a preset control limit. The performance of some heuristic abort policies is analyzed for comparison. The contribution of this article lies in scheduling mission abort plans that utilize both condition monitoring and age information, which enhances the timeliness and robustness of risk control. A case study on inertial navigation systems of UAV executing line inspection missions is used to demonstrate the applicability and superiority of the proposed abort policies.

Joint optimization of mission abort and protective device selection policies for multistate systems

Xian Zhao et al.

Summary: This article proposes a condition-based mission abort policy for safety-critical systems. The policy terminates a mission and initiates a rescue procedure immediately if the system state is worse than a control limit. The article evaluates mission reliability and system survivability to analyze the risk of mission failure and system failure. It also explores the optimal mission abort threshold and the joint optimization of mission abort and protective device selection policies.

Optimal condition-based warranty policy for multi-state products with three guarantees service

Liying Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a three-stage conditional warranty model, which divides the warranty period into different stages based on the condition of the product and uses Markov and renewal process theories to analyze the failure process and warranty cost. A recursive algorithm is also introduced to find the optimal partition method of working states and warranty period.

Multi-criteria mission abort policy for systems subject to two-stage degradation process

Xian Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates condition-based mission abort policies to balance mission reliability and system survivability. Degradation control limit and time threshold are dependent on duration in the normal stage. Structural properties of optimal abort thresholds are explored to minimize costs of mission and system failure.

Optimal maintenance strategies for warranty products with limited repair time and limited repair number

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Modern warranty policies often include limits on repair time and number of repairs to protect customer interests. Under a rebate warranty policy, sellers must refund customers if product failures or repair times exceed set limits. Minimal repair is done during warranty period, with post-warranty repair costs covered by customers. Optimal maintenance strategy for warranty products is proven theoretically by minimizing expected cost rate. Lemon law-protected warranty cars are used as an example to illustrate rebate warranty model.
