A hybrid time-frequency method for robust drive-by modal identification of bridges

Premjeet Singh et al.

Summary: Indirect bridge health monitoring (iBHM) has gained attention as an alternative to direct monitoring techniques. This paper proposes a hybrid time-frequency method that can decouple interactions between vehicles and bridges and perform robust bridge modal identification. Validation studies show promising results for this iBHM method.

Vibration feature extraction using signal processing techniques for structural health monitoring: A review

Chunwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an important and hot topic in various fields, aiming to estimate the health condition of structures and understand their unique characteristics through assessing measured physical parameters in real-time. Signal processing plays a crucial role in vibration-based SHM research, with the goal of identifying changes or damages from vibration signals and detecting, locating, and quantifying any existing damages. This paper comprehensively reviews recent progress in using signal processing techniques for vibration-based SHM approaches, with a focus on feature extraction in the time and frequency domains.

A review of mobile sensing of bridges using moving vehicles: Progress to date, challenges and future trends

Abdollah Malekjafarian et al.

Summary: Sensors installed on moving vehicles have been extensively used for condition monitoring and structural assessment of bridges. These methods rely on measuring dynamic responses on passing vehicles to identify the bridge's dynamic characteristics and assess its structural condition. The critical advantage of these methods is the ability to monitor multiple bridges in a transport network at a relatively lower cost.

Beam damage detection using synchronisation of peaks in instantaneous frequency and amplitude of vibration data

Mohsen Mousavi et al.

Summary: This paper explores the advantages of using Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) in detecting local damage on beam type structures subjected to a sprung mass. By introducing a new damage sensitive feature (DSF), it enhances peaks at the damage positions while suppressing peaks at other locations, demonstrating superior performance compared to the well-known Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method.
