Metagenomic insights into taxonomic diversity and metabolic potential of bacterial communities associated with tannery waste-contaminated soils

T. Lukhele et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to anthropogenic stressors can impact microbial communities, resulting in either novel biotypes or reduced microbial diversity. Tannery waste dumpsite soils show lower species diversity but distinct core microbiome with potential for bioremediation tools.

Relationship of soil pH value and soil Pb bio-availability and Pb enrichment in tea leaves

Jianghua Ye et al.

Summary: More than a third of tea plantations in Anxi county had been acidified. The decrease of pH value leads to an increase in the bio-availability coefficient of soil Pb content and the enrichment coefficient of Pb content in tea leaves. The lower soil pH value resulted in the increase of the absorption and accumulation of Pb by tea trees, thus an increase of Pb content in tea leaves.

Mechanical properties of landfill components under low to medium stress levels

Iesa Akbari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the shear and volume change responses of landfill materials using a large direct shear apparatus. The results showed that the shear strength of the materials is lower for municipal soil waste (MSW) under low normal stresses, but higher under high vertical stresses. In the daily soil cover, an increase in fines content led to an increase in cohesion but a decrease in friction angles. Additionally, parameters such as recompression index and coefficient of permeability decreased with an increase in fines content.

Bacterial Diversity and Community Structure of a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill: A Source of Lignocellulolytic Potential

Ogechukwu Bose Chukwuma et al.

Summary: Omics technology was used to analyze the microbial community in a landfill, revealing high bacterial diversity and significant influence of temperature and moisture content. PICRUSt analysis provided insights into the community's metabolic functions, particularly focusing on lignocellulolytic enzymes. These results contribute to understanding the dominant organisms in landfills and the enzymes involved in lignocellulose breakdown.

Community diversity metrics, interactions, and metabolic functions of bacteria associated with municipal solid waste landfills at different maturation stages

Lerato Sekhohola-Dlamini et al.

Summary: The study found that the bacterial community in the 14-year-old landfill had higher diversity, dominated by copiotrophs associated with positive cooccurrence interactions; whereas the bacterial community in the 36-year-old landfill was mainly lithotrophs linked to negative coexclusion interactions, greatly reducing bacterial diversity and richness.

Local Geomorphological Gradients and Land Use Patterns Play Key Role on the Soil Bacterial Community Diversity and Dynamics in the Highly Endemic Indigenous Afrotemperate Coastal Scarp Forest Biome

Henry Joseph Oduor Ogola et al.

Summary: Southern Afrotemperate forests are small, multi-layered, highly fragmented biodiversity rich biomes, where the soil bacterial community structure and function differ significantly between forests and sugarcane farms, with distinct associations to soil nutrients and habitats. The study reveals the importance of local topographical/geomorphological gradients and land use on shaping the structure and composition of bacterial communities in scarp forest soils.

Waste Disposal Practices in Low-Income Settlements of South Africa

Lorren Kirsty Haywood et al.

Summary: The increase in domestic solid waste in South African low-income communities is linked to population growth and urbanization. Families living in shacks are more likely to dump waste in the street. Lack of proper sanitation and access to piped water increase the likelihood of improper waste disposal practices.

Resistance of bacteria isolated from leachate to heavy metals and the removal of Hg by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain FZ-2 at different salinity levels in a batch biosorption system

Muhammad Fauzul Imron et al.

Summary: The study found that bacteria isolated from non-active sanitary landfill leachate showed varying resistance to different heavy metals, with Hg being the most toxic. Among the bacteria, P. aeruginosa FZ-2 demonstrated the highest removal efficiency for Hg in water with different salinity levels.
