Fixed and tracking PV systems for Net Zero Energy Buildings: Comparison between yearly and monthly energy balance

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of the time span of energy balance on the self-sufficiency of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). By comparing different photovoltaic systems (fixed and tracking) and energy balance approaches (yearly and monthly), it is found that the PV surface that achieves NZEB targets on a yearly basis may not always achieve the same objective on a monthly balance. Additionally, it is observed that photovoltaic systems with solar tracking have a smaller size and more stable energy production, with less reduction in operational and embodied CO2 emissions. However, a technical-economic analysis reveals that design solutions meeting NZEB targets may not always align with the financial interests of private stakeholders.
