Lethal Electric Field Thresholds for Cerebral Cells With Irreversible Electroporation and H-FIRE Protocols: An In Vitro Three-Dimensional Cell Model Study

Ting Shu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the LEF threshold for three types of cerebral cells treated with IRE or H-FIRE protocols and found that GBM cells have a lower threshold compared to healthy cells. This suggests the possibility of selectively ablating GBM cells without causing injury to healthy cells, making IRE and H-FIRE potential treatments for GBM.

Treatment Planning Optimization in Irreversible Electroporation for Complete Ablation of Variously Sized Cervical Tumors: A Numerical Study

Lujia Ding et al.

Summary: IRE is a new energy-based tumor ablation technology that has shown safe and effective tumor ablation in the past decade, with little optimization work done on varying tumor sizes. This study developed a general optimization approach for optimizing IRE protocols for cervical tumors of different sizes, while minimizing damage to normal tissues. By using statistical models and a multi-objective optimization problem model, the team successfully provided optimal protocols for three sizes of cervical tumors using the NSGA-II algorithm.

Irreversible Electroporation Enhanced by Radiofrequency Ablation: An In Vitro and Computational Study in a 3D Liver Tumor Model

Zheng Fang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a significant enhancement of irreversible electroporation for tumor ablation by pre-heating with radiofrequency ablation, possibly due to changes in the cell microenvironment or a synergistic effect of RFA and IRE. This enhancing method could potentially improve the effectiveness of interventional oncology in treating large tumors near critical organs.

Anisotropic conductivity for single-cell electroporation simulation with tangentially dispersive membrane

Fei Guo et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of intense nanosecond pulsed electric fields on cell membrane electroporation, with a focus on the impact of normal electroporation and tangential dispersion on the process. The results show that normal electroporation reduces local pore density, leading to higher transmembrane voltage, while tangential dispersion increases pore density and accelerates electroporation. Considering both factors can expand the electroporated area and alter the spatial distribution of nanopores. The proposed model provides a more accurate representation of the spatiotemporal evolution of anisotropic parameters in nsPEF-induced electroporation, which can guide parameter selection in applications.

An in vivo study of a custom-made high-frequency irreversible electroporation generator on different tissues for clinically relevant ablation zones

Summary: The study investigated the ablation zone, muscle contractions, and temperature increases in rabbit liver and kidney models using a custom-made high-frequency irreversible electroporation (H-FIRE) generator. Results showed that H-FIRE protocols were able to generate ablation zones similar to an IRE protocol without muscle contractions, with significant temperature increases observed in the protocol with the highest pulse energy.
