Microstructure-optimized concentration-gradient NCM cathode for long-life Li-ion batteries

Geon-Tae Park et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of calcination temperature on the physicochemical properties and electrochemical performance of full-concentration-gradient Li[Ni0.78Co0.10Mn0.12]O-2 (FCG NCM78) was comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the electrochemical performance of FCG NCM78 was significantly influenced by its physical properties, such as crystallinity, compositional gradient, and morphology. FCG NCM78 calcined at the optimal temperature retained its morphological texture and exhibited high crystallinity, resulting in remarkable cycling stability and superior rate capability. On the other hand, excessively coarsened FCG NCM78 cathode particles, obtained at high calcination temperatures, developed permanent microcracks, leading to severe structural damage and rapid deterioration of the solid electrolyte interphase layer.

Assessing Long-Term Cycling Stability of Single-Crystal Versus Polycrystalline Nickel-Rich NCM in Pouch Cells with 6 mAh cm-2 Electrodes

Wengao Zhao et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries based on single-crystal LiNi1-x-yCoxMnyO2 (NCM, 1-x-y >= 0.6) cathode materials have gained attention for their improved structural stability and longer cycle life compared to polycrystalline NCM batteries. This study conducted a detailed postmortem analysis, comparing the performance of pouch cells with single-crystal and polycrystalline LiNi0.60Co0.20Mn0.20O2 (NCM622) cathodes after 1375 charge-discharge cycles against graphite anodes. The findings reveal that single-crystal particles have reduced cracking and transition metal dissolution compared to polycrystalline particles, leading to superior performance in terms of capacity retention and cycle life.

Rational design of mechanically robust Ni-rich cathode materials via concentration gradient strategy

Tongchao Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that using concentration gradient design can successfully alleviate particle cracking issues in Ni-rich cathode materials without sacrificing electrode capacity. By investigating the effects of Co and Mn on the mechanical properties of Ni-rich materials, it is found that Co-enriched surface design helps suppress particle cracking formation, while Mn-enriched core limits internal expansion and improves structural integrity. The concentration gradient design also promotes morphological stability and cycling performances in Li metal coin cell configuration.

Role of Electrolyte Oxidation and Difluorophosphoric Acid Generation in Crossover and Capacity Fade in Lithium Ion Batteries

Chamithri Jayawardana et al.

Summary: This investigation reveals that in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, damage to the anode solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is mainly caused by the oxidative decomposition of LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate-based carbonate electrolytes, generating acidic species. These acidic species cross over to the anode, degrading the anode SEI components and resulting in capacity loss of the cells.

High-voltage and high-safety nickel-rich layered cathode enabled by a self-reconstructive cathode/electrolyte interphase layer

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-reconstructive cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer with good interfacial stability was designed for Ni-rich cathode by incorporating dendritic mesoporous silica (DMS) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive. The sample with a self-reconstructive CEI layer exhibited significantly superior cyclic stability under extended cut-off voltage or elevated temperature, and the flame-retardant effect of DMS additive contributed towards the thermal stability of the electrolyte and electrode, improving the safety aspect of the battery. This work provides new insights into reducing undesired self-reinforced failure process in Ni-rich cathode and reconstructing a self-healing CEI layer for high-safety, high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.
