A deep learning approach for inverse design of gradient mechanical metamaterials

Qingliang Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a multi-network deep learning system that satisfies different design requirements for microstructures with high accuracy. The analogy between color space and mechanical parameter space is used for parametric design transformation. The microstructures, designed by this system, are verified by experiments and the properties of the structures are highly accurate. The proposed design strategy accelerates the emergence of high-performance structures and provides a reference for the topology optimization design of mechanical metamaterials.

Harnessing Friction in Intertwined Structures for High-Capacity Reusable Energy-Absorbing Architected Materials

Jinyou Li et al.

Summary: This article presents a new type of energy-absorbing architected materials with high absorption capacity and superior reusability. By utilizing the rate-dependent frictional dissipation between prestressed stiff cores and a porous soft elastomer, reinforced by an intertwined stiff porous frame, the materials achieve high energy dissipation and passive adaptation of friction force with loading rate. The intertwined structure prevents stress concentration and ensures no damage and reusability of the constituents after multiple loading cycles.
