Spatiotemporal analysis of droughts in Hirfanli Dam basin, Turkey by the Standardised Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI)

Utku Zeybekoglu

Summary: This study applied the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index to assess drought in the Hirfanli Dam basin. By analyzing data from meteorological observation stations in the basin, the years with the most severe drought were determined, and drought maps were created.

New climatic zones in Iran: a comparative study of different empirical methods and clustering technique

Faezeh Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study compared four empirical approaches to climate classification and found that the Thornthwaite and Mather method emphasizes the role of water bodies and air masses. The clusters obtained from Ward's algorithm were comparable to those of empirical climate classifications, particularly the Thornthwaite and Mather method.

Multitemporal meteorological drought forecasting using Bat-ELM

Reza Gholizadeh et al.

Summary: The advancement of machine learning models in geosciences has shown significant progress in predicting natural hazards. This article introduces a new hybrid model, Bat-ELM, which combines the Bat optimization algorithm and extreme learning machine for predictive drought modeling. The proposed model outperforms the classic artificial neural network and standalone ELM models in terms of forecasting accuracy, with a 20% improvement over traditional ANN and 15% improvement over classic ELM techniques.

Soil moisture-based index for agricultural drought assessment: SMADI application in Pernambuco State-Brazil

Alzira Gabrielle Soares Saraiva Souza et al.

Summary: The study estimated meteorological and agricultural drought in different climatic regions of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using satellite data, with a focus on the Soil Moisture Agricultural Drought Index (SMADI). Results showed that SMADI could provide early warning of drought impacts on rainfed agricultural systems and was more sensitive to identifying water stress in sorghum crops compared to other indices.

Improvement of multi-layer soil moisture prediction using support vector machines and ensemble Kalman filter coupled with remote sensing soil moisture datasets over an agriculture dominant basin in China

Qian Zhu et al.

Summary: The study showed that SVM with meteorological inputs performs well for surface soil moisture prediction but poorly for root zone layers, while adding SMAP can significantly improve its performance. Coupling dual EnKF can greatly enhance the performance of SVM in both surface and root zone soil moisture prediction. SVM-EnKF can eliminate the influence of extreme values from remote sensing soil moisture products, therefore improving accuracy.
