Shedding light on declines in diversity of grassland plants

Eric Allan

Summary: A field experiment offers a new approach to explore the mechanisms through which grazing, fertilizer use, and light availability can influence the biodiversity of a grassland plant community.

Experimental rewilding may restore abandoned wood-pastures if policy allows

Pablo Garrido et al.

Summary: Large herbivores are crucial in terrestrial ecosystems, and wood-pasture conservation has become a pressing issue. Rewilding may have positive effects on restoring and conserving ecosystems, but it requires a necessary paradigm and political shift to realize its benefits.

Assessing the camera trap methodologies used to estimate density of unmarked populations

Pablo Palencia et al.

Summary: Population density estimations are crucial for wildlife management and conservation. In this study, three methods based on camera traps were compared for estimating population density without individual recognition. The results showed that each method has unique strengths and weaknesses, with Random Encounter and Staying Time (REST) being recommended for high abundance scenarios, Distance Sampling with camera traps (CT-DS) for low abundance scenarios, and Random Encounter Model (REM) for situations where camera trap performance is suboptimal. This broadens the applicability of camera trapping for estimating densities of unmarked populations.

Do large herbivores maintain open habitats in temperate forests?

Rafal Kowalczyk et al.

Summary: The study found that the increased visitation by European bison in open habitats significantly reduced the density and volume of woody vegetation, affecting tree encroachment. The combined visitation by other ungulates did not have an impact on the density or volume of woody vegetation. Smaller meadows tended to have higher density of woody vegetation.

Traditional Free-Ranging Livestock Farming as a Management Strategy for Biological and Cultural Landscape Diversity: A Case from the Southern Apennines

Claudia Troiano et al.

Summary: Mediterranean mountain landscapes are experiencing widespread abandonment, leading to the loss of traditional land use practices and impacting biodiversity. Traditional livestock grazing can be a valuable tool for maintaining high biological and cultural diversity, but stronger cooperation and attention to local needs are necessary.

Domestic Livestock and Rewilding: Are They Mutually Exclusive?

Iain J. Gordon et al.

Summary: Rewilding is a relatively new approach to nature conservation, aiming to restore ecosystems to a natural state with trophic complexity and ecological processes, but faces challenges and limitations in practice that need to be carefully considered to meet broader societal conservation needs.
