Elucidating complex triplet-state dynamics in the model system isopropylthioxanthone

Nikolaos Liaros et al.

Summary: This paper introduces techniques for investigating the dynamics of triplet states and applies these techniques to study a complex chemical system. It is found that the same color of light used for 2-photon excitation not only populates the triplet states, but also depletes them through linear absorption and reverse intersystem crossing. By using spectroscopic tools and kinetic modeling, reactive and non-reactive triplet states are identified, and compelling evidence is presented for the deactivation mechanism. This work offers the exciting possibility of understanding and controlling the photochemistry and photophysics of various triplet processes.

Model for polymerization and self-deactivation in two-photon nanolithography

Jason E. Johnson et al.

Summary: A mathematical model is developed to describe the photochemical processes in two-photon nanolithography. The model provides insights into the dominant factors and sensitivities of the process parameters, such as diffusion of photoinitiators and oxygen inhibitors, and the effect of self-deactivation on the effective nonlinearity in two-photon nanolithography.

Rapid, continuous projection multi-photon 3D printing enabled by spatiotemporal focusing of femtosecond pulses

Paul Somers et al.

Summary: This work combines high-speed projection multiphoton printing with spatiotemporal focusing to achieve rapid, layer-by-layer fabrication of 3D structures. A numerical model for computing spatiotemporal focusing and imaging is presented and verified. Complex 3D structures with smooth features are fabricated, showcasing the potential to manufacture 3D structures with micro/nanoscale features in a practical time scale.

Substituted Thioxanthone-Based Photoinitiators for Efficient Two-Photon Direct Laser Writing Polymerization with Two-Color Resolution

Teng Chi et al.

Summary: ITX is a common photoinitiator in DLW polymerization processes due to its high-efficiency photoinitiating abilities. However, improved photoinitiating materials are required for advanced high-throughput nanomanufacturing techniques. Thioxanthone-based photoinitiators with tailored optical and charge transfer properties were designed and synthesized to demonstrate enhanced two-photon polymerization DLW for superresolution properties.
