An antibacterial mechanism of titanium alloy based on micro-area potential difference induced reactive oxygen species

Shan Fu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new antibacterial mechanism, showing that the antibacterial effectiveness of alloys is proportional to the micro-area potential differences on their surface. By designing different alloys to eliminate the antibacterial contribution of copper and silver ions, it was found that high micro-area potential differences lead to the production of reactive oxygen species, resulting in antibacterial effects.

Alpha-Tocopherol Metabolites (The Vitamin E Metabolome) and Their Interindividual Variability during Supplementation

Desiree Bartolini et al.

Summary: New metabolomics protocols have allowed for the exploration of individual differences in the metabolism of alpha-tocopherol, revealing marked variability in the metabolites. Enzymatic metabolites showed significant interindividual variability, while free radical-derived metabolite alpha-tocopheryl quinone demonstrated a significant correlation with post-supplementation levels of alpha-tocopherol. The study also found that the expression of certain target genes of alpha-tocopherol in leukocytes was stimulated by supplementation, highlighting the importance of considering intrinsic variability in future studies.

Polyphenols from Grape Pomace: Functionalization of Chitosan-Coated Hydroxyapatite for Modulated Swelling and Release of Polyphenols

Giacomo Riccucci et al.

Summary: Chitosan is used to create a stable coating on hydroxyapatite, which is then functionalized for the smart release of polyphenols. The release of polyphenols is higher in inflammatory conditions and lower in physiological conditions. The electrostatic bond between polyphenols and chitosan coating, as well as the substitution of crosslinker by polyphenols during functionalization, contribute to the successful coating and functionalization process.

Ingmar A. J. van Hengel et al.

Summary: The focus is on developing orthopedic implants with intrinsic antibacterial activity using elements like Ag, Cu, and Zn to prevent implant-associated infections. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) has been widely studied for incorporating these elements into titanium implants. Studies show that Ag, Cu, and Zn can significantly reduce bacterial load without cytotoxic effects, paving the way for future research on biofunctionalization of porous implants and surfaces to prevent infections.
