Synthesis and surface characterization of a chemically modified carbon paste electrode and its application in determination of Hg(II) ion in water, food and dental amalgam samples

Aya E. Ali et al.

Summary: The development of an easy and affordable method for determining the concentration of mercury ions in various samples is of great importance due to the toxic effects of heavy metals, especially mercuric ions, on the environment. In this study, a unique carbon paste electrode was created using 1,3-Bis[2-(N-morpholino)acetamidothiophenoxy]propane (BMATPP) as a modifier, which allowed for the potentiometric measurement of Hg(II) ions in different materials. The electrode exhibited a Nernstian slope and good selectivity, and was thermally stable up to 60 degrees C. The interaction between the target Hg(II) ions and the modifier was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and infrared (IR) techniques.
