Silica Meets Tannic Acid: Designing Green Nanoplatforms for Environment Preservation

Fabiana Tescione et al.

Summary: Hybrid tannic acid-silica-based porous nanoparticles, TA-SiO2 NPs, were synthesized using renewable tannic acid biopolymer as a green and efficient adsorbent for heavy metal ions. The morphology and porosity of the particles were easily controlled by adjusting the initial amount of tannic acid. The resulting TA-SiO2 NPs exhibited excellent adsorption performance for copper (II) ions, and the adsorption behavior was influenced by both the initial Cu2+ ions concentration and the pH values.

DNA-Chitosan Hydrogels: Formation, Properties, and Functionalization with Catalytic Nanoparticles

Kohki Morikawa et al.

Summary: DNA-chitosan hydrogels based on interpolyelectrolyte complexes were prepared by in situ charging of the polysaccharide in a DNA solution. The structure, stability, and ion absorption properties of the hydrogels strongly depended on the ratio between cationic and anionic counterparts, showing efficient absorption capacity towards metal ions. The metallized hydrogels exhibited catalytic activity in reducing various nitroaromatics, depending on the ratio of chitosan and DNA in the hydrogel.
