Gating effect for gas adsorption in microporous materials-mechanisms and applications

Kaifei Chen et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, various microporous materials have been developed as effective gas adsorbents. The regulation of pore accessibility in microporous materials has been extensively studied to control the admission and release of guest molecules. This review focuses on the mechanisms of the gating effect, which is caused by structural variations induced by host-guest interactions or external stimuli. The temperature-regulated gating effect is emphasized, as it plays a key role in regulating guest admission. Molecular simulations can provide insight into the atomic-scale gate opening/closing transitions and enable the construction of quantitative models for describing gated adsorption behavior. The gating effect in porous materials has been widely applied in gas separation and shows great potential for gas storage and sensing applications.

Ultrahigh selectivity of benzene/cyclohexane separation by ZIF-8 framework: Insights from spin-probe EPR spectroscopy

Artem S. Poryvaev et al.

Summary: The liquid-phase separation of cyclohexane and benzene is both in demand and challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising selective sorbents for extracting components from the mixture. The study provides mechanistic insights into the diffusion of benzene and cyclohexane in MOF ZIF-8 and confirms that only benzene can penetrate the particles. However, there is a decrease in separation efficiency and only partial removal of benzene in mixtures with small fractions of benzene due to reverse diffusion.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Separation from Flue and Biogas Mixtures

Rupam Sahoo et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to separate CO2 from flue gas and biogas using nonthermal-based separations, such as adsorption-based or membrane-separation technology employing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This review summarizes the strategies, performance parameters, and molecular-level mechanisms of such separations, and offers critical insights and future recommendations for further development of MOF materials as flue and biogas separators.

Recent advances in direct air capture by adsorption

Xuancan Zhu et al.

Summary: Significant progress has been made in the field of direct air capture (DAC) in recent years, with the large-scale deployment of DAC through adsorption being technically feasible. However, further efforts are needed in adsorption-based DAC technologies. This review provides a comprehensive description of materials development, adsorbent shaping, characterization, simulation, process design, system integration, and economic analysis of adsorption-based DAC. It emphasizes the importance of developing affordable DAC adsorbents and efficient DAC adsorptive processes. The synergy between DAC and carbon capture technologies can contribute to mitigating the long-term effects of climate change. Further investigations into DAC application in various industries are also necessary.
