Rheological and physicomechanical properties of rod milling sand-based cemented paste backfill modified by sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate

Qinli Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the effect of solid content (SC), lime-to-sand ratio, and sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF) dosage on the rheological and physicomechanical properties of rod milling sand-based cemented paste backfill (RCPB). The results show that the performance of RCPB is influenced by the SNF dosage, lime-to-sand ratio, and SC. The addition of SNF improves the workability and cohesion of RCPB, as well as enhances its early compressive strength.

A methodological approach applied to elaborate alkali-activated binders for mine paste backfills

Noureddine Ouffa et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodological approach to formulate suitable alkali-activated binders (AAB) for cemented paste backfill (CPB) at the laboratory scale, addressing the challenge of finding a binder composition that is compatible with the specificities of mine tailings. The researchers substituted potentially reactive mine tailings with fine siliceous sand to investigate the mechanical properties related to the binders, and created mixtures and pure pastes to study the reaction kinetics and microstructural properties of the AABs. The results showed that a binder composed of 75% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and 25% fly ash (FA) activated by NaOH within a concentration interval of [0.5 N; 1 N] can be used as a suitable alternative to the traditional GU/GGBFS blended binder. The findings and methodology of this study are promising for the development of eco-friendly binders in CPBs, although further considerations and research are needed for industrial-scale application.

Rheological behavior of paste in metal mines

Aixiang Wu et al.

Summary: Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is an effective approach for tailings management and underground goaf treatment. Paste rheology, which studies the flow and deformation behaviors of paste during the CPB process, plays a crucial role in solving engineering problems. However, due to the complexity of paste rheology, further research is needed to establish a comprehensive theoretical system.

Qiusong Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mechanical performance and heavy metal retention of cemented paste backfill (CPB) in managing lead/zinc mine tailings by comparing different binder strategies. The use of bentonite effectively optimized early-age mechanical performance and retained heavy metals within the cementitious matrix. The results suggest that bentonite can be an attractive alternative for in-situ remediation of lead/zinc mine tailings to reduce environmental influence.

Role of silica fume in alkali-activated slag/glass powder paste

Long Li et al.

Summary: The influences of silica fume (SF) on the properties of sodium silicate-based alkali-activated slag/glass powder (AASG) pastes were systematically investigated. The use of SF prolonged the setting time of AASG pastes and different sources of SF had different influences. Incorporating SF increased the yield stress and plastic viscosity of fresh AASG paste at low shear rates, while decreasing plastic viscosity at high shear rates. The compressive strength of AASG paste increased first and then decreased with increasing SF content, with an optimal SF content of about 10%.

Hamza Gullu et al.

Summary: The experimental research aimed to investigate the potential use of cold-bonded geopolymer stabilizers, made with metakaolin and slag, for grouting in ground enhancement. Results showed that low replacements of stabilizers (0%-30%) exhibited good rheological and fresh properties, effectively addressing flow issues in grouting. Additionally, adding 10% of metakaolin (MK), slag (SL), and a mixture of slag and metakaolin (GSL + MK) showed the best unconfined compressive strength responses at 28 days.
