Sulfuric Acid Granulation of Copper-Nickel Ore Tailings: Leaching of Copper and Nickel in the Presence of Sulfide Oxidation Activators

Andrey Goryachev et al.

Summary: A laboratory scale study was conducted to find an effective method for processing fine concentration tailings of copper-nickel ores. The study proposed a sulfuric acid tailing granulation process followed by heap leaching of the granules. Various methods of preparation and storage of the granular material were discussed. It was found that adding an oxidizing agent during irrigating the granules had an effect on the recovery of metals. The study also examined the recovery performance of non-ferrous metals during subsequent heap leaching and the role of nitrogen compounds, specifically nitrous acid, in metal recovery after preliminary storage at subzero temperatures.

Bioleaching Process for Copper Extraction from Waste in Alkaline and Acid Medium

Ivica Ristovic et al.

Summary: Flotation wastes are a valuable secondary raw material and source of metals worldwide. The study investigated bioleaching of copper from flotation waste in alkaline and acidic environments, finding that alkaline bioleaching increased copper leaching concentration, while nutrient addition in acidic medium enhanced sulfide mineral degradation and increased copper recovery.

Effective separation and recovery of valuable metals from waste Ni-based batteries: A comprehensive review

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: With the rapid growth of the battery industry and the corresponding potential environmental pollution, recycling waste nickel-based batteries has become essential. This review summarizes the sources and characteristics of valuable metals in these batteries and compares and discusses various treatment processes, such as acid leaching, bio-leaching, and pyrometallurgy. The challenges faced by different pretreatment and recovery processes are highlighted, and a comprehensive treatment method combining hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy processes is proposed. The properties of valuable metals products obtained by different treatment processes are discussed, providing useful advice for the completely harmless treatment of waste nickel-based batteries.

Prospective environmental assessment of reprocessing and valorization alternatives for sulfidic copper tailings

Lugas Raka Adrianto et al.

Summary: This study investigates different reprocessing pathways for copper tailings to produce secondary metals and building materials. It finds that only when all co-products are utilized, reprocessing can offer environmental benefits, saving from 25 to 930 kg CO2-eq per tonne of treated copper tailings. Recommendations are proposed to enhance the environmental performance of mine tailings reprocessing strategies for sustainable development of the metal industry.

Dissolution Kinetics of Chlorine from Iron Ore Sintering Dust

Honghu Tang et al.

Summary: This study designed an in-situ monitoring system to detect chloride ion water leaching behaviors and investigated various parameters influencing the kinetic behaviors. The results showed that at low solid/liquid ratio, the dissolution process was diffusion-controlled, while it shifted to surface chemical reaction-controlled as the ratio increased. Increasing temperature and stirring speed improved the chlorine removal speed.

Acid Mine Drainage Dynamics from a Paste Tailing Deposit: Effect of Sulfate Content on the Consistency and Chemical Stability after Storage

Eduardo Leiva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the release of sulfate from surface paste tailings and its impact on the strength, consistency, and stability of the tailings. The results suggest that sulfate has an effect on the consistency of the tailings, but the release of acid runoff with high sulfate load from the tailings is negligible.
