Correlation between precipitates evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Sc-Zr alloy with Er additions

Li Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between precipitates evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Sc-Zr alloy with Er additions during isothermal ageing. Results show that Er additions significantly improve hardness by increasing the nucleation rate of Al-3(Er,Sc,Zr) precipitates, leading to a higher density of fine nanoparticles. First-principles calculations demonstrate energetically favored solute-solute interactions, rationalizing the observed precipitate structure and formation mechanism.

Effect of solute clusters on plastic instability in magnesium alloys

Risheng Pei et al.

Summary: The interaction between solute atoms and matrix dislocations during plastic deformation is crucial for understanding the flow behavior of materials. In this study, Luders band formation and dynamic strain aging were investigated in a Mg-1%Mn-1%Nd (wt.%) alloy subjected to uniaxial tension at different temperatures. The microstructure of the alloy was analyzed using three dimensional atom probe tomography, and the role of solute clusters in triggering plastic instability was revealed.

Room-temperature-deformation-induced chemical short-range ordering in a supersaturated ultrafine-grained Al-Zn alloy

Z. Z. Song et al.

Summary: This study reports chemical short-range ordering in an ultrafine-grained supersaturated Al-Zn alloy introduced by severe plastic deformation at room temperature, resulting in an ordered L1(0)-AlZn structure with dimensions of 1-3 nm. Vacancies introduced by severe plastic deformation are believed to play an important role in the formation of chemical short-range ordering at room temperature.

The origins of segregation behaviors of solute atoms and their effect on the strength of α-Al//θ′-Al2Cu interfaces in Al-Cu alloys

Xiangkai Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the segregation and strengthening behaviors of solute atoms Cd, Si, Sc, and Zr at different interfaces using first-principles calculations. The results show that the segregation behaviors are primarily determined by chemical contributions, while both chemical and mechanical contributions affect the segregation behaviors at some interfaces. The strengthening effects are mainly dominated by the chemical contribution, with Sc and Zr leading to an increase in strength and Cd causing a weakening effect. The findings provide insights into improving the mechanical properties of Al-Cu alloys.

Solute cluster evolution during deformation and high strain hardening capability in naturally aged Al-Zn-Mg alloy

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of solute clusters on the mechanical properties of a commercial Al-Zn-Mg alloy during natural aging (NA). It is found that dense solute clusters enhance the yield strength and strain hardening ability of the alloy without affecting dislocation density evolution. Solute clusters undergo a dissolution-to-coarsening transition during deformation, potentially contributing to the high strain hardening rate observed.

Direct observation of chemical short-range order in a medium-entropy alloy

Xuefei Chen et al.

Summary: The study provides direct experimental evidence of chemical short-range atomic-scale ordering (CSRO) in a VCoNi medium-entropy alloy through diffraction and electron microscopy analysis. The research demonstrates that using specific crystallographic directions can reveal CSRO in face-centred-cubic VCoNi concentrated solution, offering insights into atomic packing configuration and dislocation interactions enhanced by CSROs.

Chemical short range order strengthening in BCC complex concentrated alloys

E. Antillon et al.

Summary: Atomistic methods were used to anneal two BCC chemically complex alloys to evaluate the effect of chemical short-range order on alloy strength. It was found that annealing led to a softening of the BCC quaternary alloy but had minimal effect on solid solution strengthening in the ternary alloy. Results were modeled using an extension of the Suzuki model of substitutional solid solution strengthening, with good agreement between the model results and direct atomistic simulation data.
