Differences between home blood pressure and strictly measured office blood pressure and their determinants in Japanese men

Sayaka Kadowaki et al.

Summary: This study found that at the population level, strictly measured office blood pressure (st-OBP) and home blood pressure (HBP) measurements were comparable, but individual differences between HBP and st-OBP were influenced by factors such as smoking and BMI. Smokers and obese individuals taking antihypertensive drugs had higher HBP than st-OBP, suggesting a potential underestimation of their blood pressure levels.

Office blood pressure measurement: A comprehensive review

Saulat Siddique et al.

Summary: Traditional methods of measuring blood pressure have been found to be prone to errors, especially the white coat phenomena. The World Health Organization no longer recommends the use of Mercury sphygmomanometer and Aneroid variety. Oscillometric devices, particularly the Automated Office Blood Pressure measurement device, are now preferred for their accuracy, though cost may be a barrier. An alternative is the use of a simple oscillometric device with criteria similar to the SPRINT study, but space constraints and post-clinic blood measurement present challenges.

Contributions of Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressures to Cardiovascular Outcomes in the ALLHAT Study

Nathan K. Itoga et al.

Summary: The study found that there are differences in the risk pattern of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) depending on clinical outcomes, with different SBP and DBP ranges associated with the lowest risk for different cardiovascular events. This suggests that individualization of blood pressure targets may be necessary based on the specific cardiovascular event for which a patient is most at risk.

Different therapeutic associations of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors with coronavirus disease 2019 compared with usual pneumonia

Hae-Young Lee et al.

Summary: This study compared the association of ARBs and ACEIs with COVID-19-related mortality in Korea. While ACEIs showed potential beneficial effects in pneumonia patients, the protective effect of ARBs observed in pneumonia was not significant in COVID-19 patients. Meta-analyses suggested a positive correlation with survival for ACEIs and a neutral association for ARBs in terms of mortality.

The Korean Hypertension Cohort study: design and baseline characteristics

Hae-Young Lee et al.

Summary: The Korean Hypertension Cohort (KHC) study aims to develop a cardiovascular risk calculation model for over 11,000 HT patients. Results show that around one-third of patients belonged to high and moderate cardiovascular risk groups, and during a 2-year follow-up period, blood pressures significantly decreased, but the cardiovascular event rate was 7.5%.

Korea Heart Disease Fact Sheet 2020: Analysis of Nationwide Data

Hyeok Hee Lee et al.

Summary: The Korea Heart Disease Fact Sheet published in 2020 outlines the increasing trends in CVD mortality and hospitalization over the past decade, with a substantial proportion of adults in 2018 carrying multiple cardiovascular risk factors. With rapid population aging, a continued increase in CVD appears inevitable in Korea, emphasizing the need for concerted and sustained approaches to prevent and reduce the burden of CVD.
