Gap analysis in manufacturing, innovation and marketing of medical devices in the Asia-Pacific region

Binaya Sapkota et al.

Summary: Despite the potential market in the Asia Pacific region for medical devices, many countries rely on imports due to obstacles in technological innovation and regulatory provisions. This review highlights the gap in manufacturing, innovation, and marketing of devices within the region and between the Asia Pacific and western countries. The lack of stringent regulatory measures and quality indicators in many Asia Pacific nations calls for urgent harmonization of regulatory standards. Considerable investment in innovation, manufacturing, and establishing quality standards is needed among Asia Pacific countries to ensure an adequate supply of quality medical devices.

Health Care Price Transparency in Ophthalmology

Sean T. Berkowitz et al.

Summary: Despite recent legislation aimed at increasing price transparency in healthcare, current standard charges for ophthalmologic procedures still lack clarity, with significant variability between hospitals that is not attributed to geographical cost differences. This ambiguity in pricing may disproportionately affect vulnerable and uninsured patients, indicating a need for further legislation to clarify pricing standards and provide more transparent cost information for consumers.

Sustainability Challenge of Eastern Europe-Historical Legacy, Belt and Road Initiative, Population Aging and Migration

Mihajlo Jakovljevic et al.

Summary: The health systems in Eastern Europe and the Balkans were shaped by local socioeconomic circumstances and have different risk sharing and financing systems. Modern healthcare systems are facing challenges such as aging population, innovation in medical technology, rising healthcare demand, and inefficiencies in financing. The economies of these countries are highly dependent on traditional carbon fuels and may face difficulties transitioning to sustainable development due to post-pandemic green recovery strategies and the impact of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution and the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Global South political economy of health financing and spending landscape - history and presence

Mihajlo Jakovljevic et al.

Summary: Global South nations, particularly China and India, have historically been economic powerhouses driving social and economic development. Recent decades have seen a reestablishment of traditional world economic structures, leading to accelerated growth in LMICs and emerging countries. The healthcare landscape in these regions has been greatly impacted by the medical device and pharmaceutical industry, with domestic manufacturing only partially meeting the rising demand. Political economy plays a key role in shaping health financing strategies, addressing fiscal gaps and challenges such as insufficient reimbursement rates and slow technology adoption.
