Energy analysis and surrogate modeling for the green methanol production under dynamic operating conditions

Xiaoti Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the methanol synthesis and distillation processes for pilot-scale green methanol production through dynamic modeling, finding differences in energy efficiency during load change operations and relatively small fluctuations achieved with a 1-hour ramp rate. Surrogate modeling for the MSD process using the NARX model exhibited good accuracy and can be further integrated with models for other sections of the power-to-methanol process.

Assessment of integrated energy systems for the production and use of renewable methanol by water electrolysis and CO2 hydrogenation

Francesco Lonis et al.

Summary: The paper explores the conversion of renewable hydrogen and recycled CO2 to valuable fuels in power-to-liquids systems as a key solution to reduce CO2 emissions. Methanol is identified as a promising candidate for use as an energy carrier and chemical feedstock. Through detailed modeling and analysis of different system configurations, the overall efficiency of both systems was found to be slightly lower than 0.35.

Process modelling and life cycle assessment coupled with experimental work to shape the future sustainable production of chemicals and fuels

Iasonas Ioannou et al.

Summary: Transitioning to cleaner products for meeting sustainable development goals and carbon neutrality targets presents challenges to the chemical industry. Collaborative efforts between experimental and computational groups, along with the use of process systems engineering tools, are essential for assessing and optimizing alternative chemical production patterns based on renewable resources. The focus is on supporting experiments and generating insights into delivering chemicals and fuels with a lower environmental footprint.
