Third joint inter-agency report on integrated analysis of consumption of antimicrobial agents and occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from humans and food-producing animals in the EU/EEA JIACRA III 2016-2018

Summary: The report analyzed data from 2016-2018 on antimicrobial consumption and antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from humans and food-producing animals obtained by the agencies' EU-wide surveillance networks. Significant variations in antimicrobial consumption between countries were observed in both human and food animal sectors.

Antimicrobial resistance in non-Typhoidal Salmonella from retail poultry meat by antibiotic usage-related production claims - United States, 2008-2017

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of Salmonella in conventional poultry samples (8.6%) was higher than reduced or no antibiotic use poultry samples (5.1%). The risk of multidrug resistance for Salmonella isolates from conventional samples was 2.61 times higher than isolates from reduced antibiotic use samples. Additionally, the frequencies of aminoglycoside resistance gene strB and beta-lactam resistant gene bla(CMY-2) were higher in isolates from conventional meat.

Summary: The present study revealed the presence of antimicrobial resistance among prevalent toxinotypes of Clostridium perfringens recovered from different animals in Tamil Nadu, India. Isolates showed resistance to multiple antibiotics and carried resistance genes for tetracycline, erythromycin, and bacitracin. Insights into gene transfer mechanisms can help prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Staphylococcus aureus in Agriculture: Lessons in Evolution from a Multispecies Pathogen

Soyoun Park et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus is a formidable bacterial pathogen responsible for infections in humans and various animals, with specific pathoadaptive clonal lineages emerged in the agricultural sector. The close contact between humans and animals in high-density environments drives the evolution of S. aureus, while the use of antibiotics in agriculture contributes to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, posing concerns for human health. Addressing antibiotic resistance in S. aureus from agricultural practices without negatively impacting productivity is a challenging priority.

Antimicrobial Resistance Phenotypes and Genotypes of Escherichia coli Isolates from Broiler Chickens Fed Encapsulated Cinnamaldehyde and Citral

Chongwu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of in-feed encapsulated cinnamaldehyde and citral on antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypes of Escherichia coli in broiler chickens of different ages. The results showed that the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance decreased as birds aged, and resistance to certain antibiotics was lower in isolates from the CIN or CIN+CIT groups. Whole genome sequencing revealed differences in AMR genes and plasmids in isolates from different treatment groups. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the effects of these feed supplements.

Differences in Genotype and Antimicrobial Resistance between Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Organic and Conventionally Produced Chickens in Sweden

Ingrid Hansson et al.

Summary: The study found that Campylobacter isolates from organic chickens were generally sensitive to antibiotics, while a portion of isolates from conventional chickens showed resistance to quinolones and tetracycline. There were shared sequence types between organic and conventional chickens, but two sequence types from conventional chickens exhibited different resistance phenotypes compared to the rest.
