Satellite DNA evolution in Corvoidea inferred from short and long reads

Valentina Peona et al.

Summary: This study explores the diversity and evolution of satDNA in bird species belonging to different genera using short- and long-read data. The results reveal rapid divergence of satDNA between closely related crow species, while satDNA appears more similar between birds-of-paradise species of different genera.

Satellitome comparison of two oedipodine grasshoppers highlights the contingent nature of satellite DNA evolution

Juan Pedro M. Camacho et al.

Summary: By comparing the satellitomes of two grasshoppers, it was found that satellite DNA degenerates through point mutation and homogenizes through partial turnovers caused by massive tandem duplications. Orthologous satDNAs show different characteristics at intra- and interspecific levels, and their evolutionary pathways are primarily contingent, but concerted evolution emerges promptly after lineages split.

Satellitome analysis illuminates the evolution of ZW sex chromosomes of Triportheidae fishes (Teleostei: Characiformes)

Rafael Kretschmer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and role of satellite DNA (satDNA) in the evolution of sex chromosomes in Triportheus species. The results revealed differences in satDNA accumulation on the Z chromosome among different species and different homogenization rates between the Z and W chromosomes. The most abundant satDNA family was found to be localized in the centromeres and potentially played a role in centromere evolution.

In-Depth Satellitome Analyses of 37 Drosophila Species Illuminate Repetitive DNA Evolution in the Drosophila Genus

Leonardo G. de Lima et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of SatDNA in 37 species from the genus Drosophila, revealing the diversity and variation of SatDNA sequences in the genome. The study also identified shared SatDNA families among closely related species and the emergence of species-specific SatDNA families. Additionally, the study found a positive correlation between genome size and the category of repetitive elements.

Accelerated Diversification Explains the Exceptional Species Richness of Tropical Characoid Fishes

Bruno F. Melo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the rich diversity of Neotropical freshwater fish species has accumulated over the past 60 million years before undergoing a significant diversification around 30 million years ago. Three lineages of species-rich and ecologically diverse fish families originated during the Paleocene period and experienced notable bursts of diversification during the Oligocene epoch.

The complete sequence of a human genome

Sergey Nurk et al.

Summary: The Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium has presented a complete sequence of a human genome, T2T-CHM13, which covers the whole genome except for the Y chromosome. This new sequence includes gapless assemblies, error corrections in previous references, and nearly 200 million base pairs of additional sequence with gene predictions, including protein coding genes. The completion of important regions allows for further studies on genetic variations and functions.

Revealing the Satellite DNA History in Psalidodon and Astyanax Characid Fish by Comparative Satellitomics

Caio Augusto Gomes Goes et al.

Summary: This study characterized the satellitomes of three distinct characid fish species and compared them with an available satellitome. Multiple satellite DNA families were identified, some of which were shared among species. Chromosome mapping revealed that the clustered satellite DNA was mainly located in subtelomeric and pericentromeric areas. The As51 satellite DNA family in Psalidodon species showed diversification, with abundance variations in each species.

A Perspective of Molecular Cytogenomics, Toxicology, and Epigenetics for the Increase of Heterochromatic Regions and Retrotransposable Elements in Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) Exposed to the Parasiticide Trichlorfon

Maria dos Santos Costa et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of Trichlorfon on retrotransposable elements in the genome of Colossoma macropomum. The results showed that Trichlorfon activates the retrotransposable elements, particularly Rex3. These elements were found to be dispersed in the chromosomes of Colossoma macropomum, and Trichlorfon enhanced chromosomal heterochromatinization. This behavior was most prominent at higher Trichlorfon concentrations and exposure times, indicating genetic flexibility for environmental adaptation.

Phylogenomics of Piranhas and Pacus (Serrasalmidae) Uncovers How Dietary Convergence and Parallelism Obfuscate Traditional Morphological Taxonomy

M. A. Kolmann et al.

Summary: The Amazon and neighboring South American river basins are home to the most diverse freshwater fish assemblages in the world, with the Serrasalmidae family being one of the most prominent. Despite their widespread occurrence and ecological significance, the evolutionary history and systematics of serrasalmids are still controversial. Researchers used exon capture to reexamine the evolutionary relationships among 63 species across all 16 serrasalmid genera and their nearest outgroups, proposing new subfamily affiliations and clarifying the relationships among serrasalmid genera.

Large vs small genomes in Passiflora: the influence of the mobilome and the satellitome

Mariela Sader et al.

Summary: This study compared the organization and diversity of repetitive elements in three Passiflora species with different genome sizes, revealing that LTR retrotransposons are the most abundant elements in all three genomes. The largest genome species accumulated more repetitive DNA sequences, while the smallest genome species evolved through diversification of different repeat types, particularly satDNAs. These findings highlight the variations in repetitive sequences among Passiflora species with different genome sizes.

The B Chromosomes of Prochilodus lineatus (Teleostei, Characiformes) Are Highly Enriched in Satellite DNAs

Jose Henrique Forte Stornioli et al.

Summary: Satellite DNA plays a crucial role in the evolution and diversification of B chromosomes in the fish species Prochilodus lineatus, with evidence of repetitive DNA accumulation on these dispensable elements. The satellitome of P. lineatus was characterized, revealing six satellite DNAs located on all B-types and suggesting a similar genomic content. Furthermore, a population without B chromosomes was described for the first time.
