A Comparison between Three Tuning Strategies for Gaussian Kernels in the Context of Univariate Genomic Prediction

Osval A. Montesinos-Lopez et al.

Summary: Genomic prediction is changing the way plant breeding is done by allowing the selection of candidate genotypes without measuring their traits in the field. The success of this method depends on various factors, including the statistical machine learning method used. This study compares three tuning methods for the Gaussian kernel and finds that careful tuning is important for obtaining the best prediction performance. Grid search and Bayesian optimization were found to be the most effective tuning methods. The prediction performance improvements ranged from 2.1% to 27.8% across the six datasets analyzed.

A Comparison of Three Machine Learning Methods for Multivariate Genomic Prediction Using the Sparse Kernels Method (SKM) Library

Osval A. Montesinos-Lopez et al.

Summary: Genomic selection has revolutionized the way plant breeders select genotypes, using statistical machine learning models to predict phenotypic values of new lines. Multi-trait genomic prediction models leverage correlated traits to improve accuracy. This paper compares the performance of three multi-trait methods and finds that their performance varies under different predictors.
