Heavy metal and metalloid toxicity in horticultural plants: Tolerance mechanism and remediation strategies

Iqra Noor et al.

Summary: Heavy metals and metalloids are major soil pollutants that limit crop production worldwide. The exposure to these pollutants induces oxidative stress in plants and alters their biochemical and morphological characteristics. Plants have evolved complex physiological and cellular defense strategies to cope with heavy metal toxicity, such as sequestration and transportation of metals, activation of signaling pathways, and detoxification mechanisms. Understanding the toxicity, signaling pathways, and tolerance mechanisms of heavy metals will help in developing new crop varieties and improving phytoremediation.

Technologies for removing heavy metal from contaminated soils on farmland: A review

Hai Lin et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the status of heavy metal pollution in agricultural fields and the research progress of removal technologies, and provides an analysis and comparison of remediation technologies from three aspects: physicochemical, electrochemical, and biological. The results show that the morphology of soil heavy metals is an important reference for selecting remediation methods, and phytoremediation and magnetic biochar removal of heavy metals show great potential for development.

Two metallothionein genes highly expressed in rice nodes are involved in distribution of Zn to the grain

Gui Jie Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, highly expressed metallothionein genes OsMT2b and OsMT2c in rice nodes were found to play a crucial role in zinc distribution to grains through chelation and transport, impacting grain yield. Knockout of these genes led to increased zinc accumulation in nodes but decreased zinc distribution to panicles, resulting in reduced grain yield. The findings suggest that OsMT2b and OsMT2c are key players in zinc distribution in rice plants.

Molecular mechanisms of plant adaptive responses to heavy metals stress

Iryna V. Kosakivska et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptive and defense responses during metal stress, including entry, transport and accumulation of heavy metals, effects on physiological processes, gene expressions, and ion sequestration. The most important mechanism of heavy metal tolerance was found to be extracellular and intracellular sequestration, with an emphasis on the role of organic anions and cellular receptors. The functioning of chloroplasts, mitochondria, and the Golgi complex under heavy metal stress were also analyzed.

Identification of three metallothioneins in the black soldier fly and their functions in Cd accumulation and detoxification

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The black soldier fly (BSF) has a strong tolerance to cadmium stress, with metallothioneins playing a crucial role in detoxification and tolerance. RNA interference experiments confirmed the importance of metallothioneins in BSF's ability to withstand cadmium toxicity. Further studies on the physiological functions of metallothioneins in BSF and other insects are needed.

Lipid peroxidation as measured by chromatographic determination of malondialdehyde. Human plasma reference values in health and disease

Cristina Mas-Bargues et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants, can lead to biomolecular damage and development of diseases. Lipids are sensitive to oxidant attack, with MDA, 4-HNE, and F2-isoprostane being the main biomarkers for lipid peroxidation assessment. The profile of PUFAs in tissues determines the proportion of each biomarker.
