Satellitome comparison of two oedipodine grasshoppers highlights the contingent nature of satellite DNA evolution

Juan Pedro M. Camacho et al.

Summary: By comparing the satellitomes of two grasshoppers, it was found that satellite DNA degenerates through point mutation and homogenizes through partial turnovers caused by massive tandem duplications. Orthologous satDNAs show different characteristics at intra- and interspecific levels, and their evolutionary pathways are primarily contingent, but concerted evolution emerges promptly after lineages split.

Repeat Age Decomposition Informs an Ancient Set of Repeats Associated With Coleoid Cephalopod Divergence

Alba Marino et al.

Summary: By reevaluating and annotating repeat elements in the genomes of coleoid cephalopods, and using network sequence divergence approaches, we have identified and characterized the ancient repeat complement shared by at least four species. Surprisingly, lower-copy-number DNA and retroelements were found to be more associated with ancient cephalopod radiation, rather than the most abundant elements in extant genomes.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative analysis of repetitive DNA, particularly satellite DNA, in geographically distant populations of Spodoptera frugiperda. The results showed that most transposable elements were commonly shared among all samples, except for two elements with divergent repeat copies. Additionally, seven satellite DNA families were identified, accounting for a considerable proportion of the genome. Limited differentiation was observed among geographically distant populations.

Summary: A new species, Panstrongylus noireaui sp. nov. from Bolivia, is described based on morphological and genetic features. It is morphologically similar to Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus but shows distinct chromosomal and molecular characteristics. Furthermore, the new species can be distinguished by specific features of the male genitalia. An updated key for the identification of Panstrongylus species is provided.

The extensive amplification of heterochromatin in Melipona bees revealed by high throughput genomic and chromosomal analysis

Jaqueline A. Pereira et al.

Summary: Satellite DNAs and transposable elements are key components of constitutive heterochromatin in genomes. Through studying two species of Melipona bees with differing amounts of heterochromatin, significant differences in repeat landscape and amplification were observed, indicating quantitative and qualitative changes in evolution. The amplification of specific repeats, such as MscuSat01-195 and LTR/Gypsy_1, in Melipona scutellaris suggests their crucial role in c-heterochromatin evolution at the chromosomal level.

Satellitome Analysis of Rhodnius prolixus, One of the Main Chagas Disease Vector Species

Eugenia E. Montiel et al.

Summary: Rhodnius prolixus' satellite DNA accounts for 8% of the total genome, composed of 39 satDNA families, including four shared with Triatoma infestans, as well as telomeric and GATA repeats. The clustering analysis revealed that most abundant satDNA families configured several superclusters, indicating complexity in R. prolixus' satellitome, with the four most abundant satDNA families being composed by different subfamilies. Transcription analysis of satDNA families in different tissues showed that 33 out of 39 families are transcribed in four different patterns of expression.
