Phospholipids in small extracellular vesicles: emerging regulators of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer

Wenguang Chang et al.

Summary: Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are generated by various cell types and have a bilayer membrane structure similar to cell membranes. The phospholipids in sEVs play important roles in cell structure, cellular processes, and cell-cell communication. sEVs are being developed as drug delivery systems and diagnostic factors for diseases. Understanding the functions of sEV phospholipids is crucial for future medical applications.

A systematic review on the role of MSC-derived exosomal miRNAs in the treatment of heart failure

Yesica Abril Botello-Flores et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes studies on microRNA expression in pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Several microRNAs were found to be more frequently reported in diabetics, such as miR-122-5p, 144-3p, 210, 375, and miR-126b, while miR-144-3p, -192, 29a, and -30d were more commonly reported in pre-diabetes. Circulating microRNAs could potentially be used as biomarkers for type 2 diabetes, but further validation in prospective and multi-center studies is needed.

Efficacy and Safety of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Jiang Yu et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis focused on the adjuvant treatment of stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The results indicated that MSCs therapy was associated with a significantly greater improvement in overall left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the effect was maintained for up to 24 months. A dosage of 10(7)-10(8) cells of MSCs was found more effective in clinical outcomes, and the optimal timing for cell transplantation might be within 2-14 days after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Noncoding RNAs from tissue-derived small extracellular vesicles: Roles in diabetes and diabetic complications

Wenguang Chang et al.

Summary: This article reviews the role of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) and noncoding RNAs in diabetes and its complications. Noncoding RNA sorting into sEVs is selective, and the function of sEVs varies according to their tissue origin. Understanding the roles of sEVs from different tissues is important for studying their molecular mechanisms and applying them as therapeutic agents for diabetes treatment.

Do Extracellular Vesicles Derived from Mesenchymal Stem Cells Contain Functional Mitochondria?

Ljubava D. Zorova et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles derived from stem cells have been widely studied for their potential use in cell therapy. This study examined two fractions of vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal stem cells and found the presence of mitochondrial components in these vesicles. However, it is still unclear whether these mitochondria are fully functional inside the vesicles.
