The effects of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) videos on arousal and mood in adults with and without depression and insomnia

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of experiencing ASMR on mood and arousal in populations with insomnia and depression symptoms. Results showed that all participants experienced increased relaxation and improved mood after watching an ASMR video, with the largest effects observed in participants who experienced ASMR and those in the depression group.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ASMR on mood, attention, physiological measures, and personality factors. The results showed that watching ASMR videos can decrease depressive feelings and heart rate. In ASMR-experiencers, there was an increase in electrodermal activity and a decrease in heart rate. EEG recordings indicated that watching ASMR videos was associated with decreased alpha and theta power and increased beta power.

However, previous research on autonomic stress responses has mainly focused on males, despite the disproportionate impact of stress-related disorders on females. This review highlights the importance of studying sex differences in autonomic responses to stress in order to understand and treat cardiometabolic dysfunction.
