Coal-derived humic acid for application in acid mine drainage (AMD) water treatment and electrochemical devices

Tonkeswar Das et al.

Summary: This research work focuses on isolating humic acid from coal in the Northeastern region of India, and exploring its application in acid mine drainage water treatment and electrochemical devices. The isolated coal-derived humic acid exhibited high humification and stability, as well as the ability to remove toxic metals from acidic water. The preliminary electrochemical properties of the isolated humic acid were also discussed, showing promising specific capacitance and stability in charge-discharge cycles.

Snapshots into carbon dots formation through a combined spectroscopic approach

Francesco Rigodanza et al.

Summary: The formation of novel carbon dots involves 4 consecutive steps: aggregation of small organic molecules, formation of a dense core with an extended shell, collapse of the shell, and aromatization of the core. The authors also demonstrate examples of routes towards tuning the core-shell design, synthesizing five novel carbon dots with an electron-dense core covered by an amine rich ligand shell. Studying the formation processes of carbon nanodots remains crucial for understanding their properties and chemical structure.

Ultrasonic-assisted chemical synthesis of activated carbon from low-quality subbituminous coal and its preliminary evaluation towards supercapacitor applications

Mousumi Bora et al.

Summary: This study introduces an eco-friendly method utilizing ultrasonic-assisted chemical activation to synthesize high-performance activated carbon from low-quality subbituminous Indian coals. The method significantly improves the adsorption properties, energy density, and power density of the activated carbon, making it suitable for low-cost supercapacitor production for small/general electronics. The reported ultrasonic-assisted chemical activation method proves to be more effective than other activation methods for large-scale synthesis of activated carbon from abundant coal resources.

Long-term effects of impurities on the particle size and optical emission of carbon dots

Nasir Javed et al.

Summary: This study explores the long-term impact of fluorescent impurities in CDs on their stability, leading to a significant increase in particle size over time and a gradual decay in the quantum yield of blue PL emission. It is found that the reduction in quantum yield is due to the decomposition of impurities, which deposit on the particles and increase their size. Additionally, purification of CDs results in a decrease in blue emission and the emergence of a solvent-dependent yellow emission, with ethanol concentration affecting the intensity of the yellow emission.
