Unraveling the mechanisms of carbon nanotube growth by chemical vapor deposition

Georgios P. Gakis et al.

Summary: The mechanisms of carbon nanotube growth on Fe/SiO2:Al2O3 catalyst by chemical vapor deposition of acetylene are unraveled through a combined computational and experimental study. A macroscopic CFD model is developed to describe the process, revealing two distinct temperature regimes for CNT formation. The experimental behavior of CNT growth is accurately described by the proposed macroscopic model.

Nano-QSAR modeling for predicting the cytotoxicity of metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles: A review

Jing Li et al.

Summary: Given the rapid development of nanotechnology, understanding the effects of nanoparticles on living organisms is crucial. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) is an effective computational technique that saves time, costs, and animal sacrifice. This review presents general procedures for constructing and applying nano-QSAR models of metal-based and metal-oxide nanoparticles (MBNPs and MONPs), and reviews the roles of molecular descriptors in the toxicological interpretation.

Thermochemical electronegativities of the elements

Christian Tantardini et al.

Summary: Electronegativity is a key property of the elements that plays an important role in structural chemistry and solid state chemistry and physics. The widely used thermochemical Pauling scale has drawbacks, leading the authors to propose a new thermochemical scale based on experimental dissociation energies that provides dimensionless values for electronegativity. This new scale corrects the flaws in the Pauling scale and improves the description of chemical bonding and thermochemistry.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
